My tattoo appointment is tonight - please tell me everything is going to be all right

Congratulations, Anaamika! I’m glad you got out of there quickly. Please show us some more pictures as it heals and take care not to scratch it.

Ok…I meant to post this sooner, and I had it typed up at work. You already got your tattoo and it looks great. But here you go…

How exciting!

I remember getting my first tattoo years ago. It’s a symbol of the five tattvas, rooted in Indian philosophy. I got many more tats after that and they are mostly visible when I dress casually, but I do cover them up for work with long sleeves.

My family back in India are not really conservative, but I knew they would express some dissent when they saw me. I hadn’t been home in over eight years and they hadn’t seen a lot of my tattoos. My mother looked at me and asked me not to “ruin” my body any further, but other than that…they were cool. And yes…I will be getting more ink in the future.

You have been planning this for a while, and you’ll be ok. The pain will disappear soon and so will the judgment (whatever) and your tat will grow on you. Enjoy and celebrate the experience since you have waited this long.

Many happy little needle pokes coming your way.

Grats Anaamika! It looks awesome! Women with tattoos are so freaking hot!

I am disappointed.

Nice tattoo… but was hoping to see more of the Anaamika person.

pssssh

It’s a tattoo on a woman’s wrist; it’s obvious from that alone that she’s stunningly gorgeous, and we already knew she was smart and classy (cause she posts on the SDMB).

geez…:frowning:

You guys are awfully nice and perhaps I’ll put a picture in the gallery. Perhaps.

I have to say, I love the color on my skin - that is the lightest part of my skin, on my wrist, and of course even that has an undertone of brown. The coppery-red really stands out and I think it looks great.

Stendhal Syndrome Oh, my family is incredibly judgy, and I don’t even know what my dad will say. Of course there is a good chance he may not even notice!

I think they have an idea that it’s part of the drug culture and a man thing, anyway, but I know my brother will love it.

Upthread, when you made this comment, I replied that you can’t have a tattoo thread without a shitter…you just couldn’t leave it alone.

I really don’t get this. If you guys hate tattoos so much, why wander into these threads? Go start your own.
But really, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tattoo thread on this board without at least one person making a stupid comment, of course it normally happens much earlier on.

It even happens to women who cut their long hair short; of course some people are going to get all judgmental about something permanent. How dare we women do something non-harmful with our own bodies that the observer hates?! We must be told over and over how wrong we are and how we have scarred our beauty.

In college, I had male friends who put up such a fuss when I said I was getting my long hair cut short. Since they wouldn’t STFU about it, I told them that if they loved the hair so much, I’d bring them the hank of hair after the cut, and they could deal with the washing and the half-hour plus to blow-dry it, the frizz control, etc. They shut up after that.

Anaamika, it looks lovely. I’m not tattooed, or even pierced; I dislike bodily adornment/modification on myself but think others should do as they wish. Even better, this is important to you, and I’m glad it went much better than you thought it would! Congrats!

I just wrote out this whole big sarcastic thing based on what you said* with you, then I realized it wasn’t me, when people make a comment to me about my tattoos, I just shrug my shoulders and say “I like them” and move on to the next subject. I’ll happily keep talking about tattoos with them so long as they aren’t going to talk down to me about them though.
I’ve just never had the energy (IRL) to argue with people about things I really don’t care to change their mind about. You don’t like tattoos…that’s fine, you’re allowed to not like them, as long as you don’t dislike them vocally at me I’m not going to argue with you.

*agreeing with you, kind of my similar response to someone saying something to me about a tattoo in an equally snarky way.

Joey P - The disappointment was only that we didn’t get to see more of Anaamika. Which should have been clear if you had read my entire post. And the “geez” was a response to SnowboarderBo’s comment - was not disapproval of getting the tattoo.

Hate to break it to you. But it is going to hurt. The good news is the area will numb up in no time and the pain should cease.

Don’t worry, I got it right away. I didn’t think you were disapproving of me. Thanks.

As for people who disapprove of tattoos, they have a right to speak up as well. Just as long as they keep it to MPSIMS standards. As such, I have no problem with Al Bundy saying his piece - I don’t agree with him, but that’s all right.

And yes, people do get overly judgy about women’s looks - but like I implied earlier, everyone is judgy over something.

I love the color, Anaamika! It looks great. For what it’s worth, other tattooed people, telling someone “that’s the most painful spot to get one!” is never helpful. Pain, and pain tolerance, is so subjective. I have one on my wrist and two just under my collarbones, and in both cases was told “OH MY GOD THAT’S THE MOST PAINFUL PLACE EVER!!!” I mean, it hurt, but certainly not remotely what I’d consider the most painful thing to happen to me ever!

Yeah- I have that Elvis on my inner upper arm, and never thought I would be able to deal with that pain based merely on the edges of my other tattoos-

But somehow I did!

It made it on a webcast too, with my daughter hovering over me, and the tears are definitely standing in my eyes, but I made it!

My fault, it’s your thread and I should have left it alone. It’s just one of my pet peeves, if you search this board for tattoo threads you’ll see that almost every single one of them will have several people shitting on it and it drives me up the wall. As someone who loves tattoos and enjoys talking about them it bugs me that some one always has to stop in to say what a terrible idea it is and what a mistake you’re making.

Sure, it looks great *now *- but what’s it going to look like when you’re 90? ( )

I agree with you, and will let it drop after this post. But this is something I did not do (or intend to) in this thread, so don’t want called out on it.

Heh. If I make it to 90, I will be thrilled in the first place.

Thanks, Joey P, I know you got my back!

Did I miss a post about the meaning behind it? I understand the nose piercing as a cultural thing. What was the deal behind the tattoo?
