My teeth hurt! (Crest Whitestrips)

I got some Crest Whitestrips (the Premium Plus ones) tonight, and I put them on both rows of teeth. About 5 minutes before they were done, my two bottom front teeth started to experience a terrible burning ow hurty sensation.

Is there anything that I can do about this? I’d love suggestions.

Get some “sensitive teeth” toothpaste. Then next time you use the strips, use them for about half the time. You’ll still get results, it will just take more applications.

Head to the grocery store, and poke around in the “tooth care” section, probably around where the White Strips were, and look for a product called Anbesol; it’s an anaesthetic gel intended to keep you sane during a toothache until the dentist can deal with you. There are other brands, but Anbesol is the one I can remember offhand.

Rub it on the pained area. It’s safe for oral use, and will numb anything it touches for quite some time.

IIRC the active ingredient is benzocaine. Anything with that in it should do the trick.

I like to use whitening strips just before bed. The pain and sensitivity diminishes quite a bit overnight. But that glass of orange juice the next morning- ouch.

Also, ensure that no part of the whitestrip is directly touching your gum. Or very little of it, anyway. I noticed an intense pain when there was contact from the whitestrip right at the gumline. Pushing the strip away from there eliminated the pain.

I 'm doing the white strips thing over the past 10 days, and while there is some tingling there isn’t pain (so far). Bear in mind that the strips work with a pretty strong peroxide solution, and you want to keep them on the teeth and off the gums as much as possible. If you have very short teeth you may want to trim the strip with scissors before you peel it off & apply it so it sits just on the teeth as much as possible.

Thanks for the gums tip. The problem seems to have taken care of itself… it was just those first two strips. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

Glad to hear that your pain has subsided. If you have a second, please visit the White Strips website and let them know that you experienced pain. Also include the lot number if you still have it.

R&D folks really do appreciate such feedback as it will help them improve the product in the future.
