My very first Comic Con today!

Plus, got our pictures taken with Leonard Nimoy - coolest thing ever!

Now I know what everyone’s talking about when they talk about Comic Cons - they are a very interesting way to spend a Saturday. There were a whole bunch of excellent costumes, there were more geeks per square inch than I have ever seen before, there were big stars just walking around in the hallways. There was also unbelievable lengths of time waiting in lines (pretty much the whole day, actually), there was unbelievable disorganization and mis-direction (which resulted in time spent waiting in the wrong lines, unfortunately), and then there was Leonard Nimoy, sitting there signing autographs and smiling, and sitting there having his picture taken with every nerd in Calgary, then standing around talking on his cellphone while he took a break from having his picture taken.

The big discussion we had was whether or not Storm Troopers look cooler with their outfits all polished and shiny, or if they look cooler with their uniforms all beat up and looking like they just got off the battlefield. Either way, I couldn’t believe how intimidating they looked in person.

All in all, we had a lot of fun today. And boy, are my feet tired!

How do you like San Diego? Is my home town treating you okay?

San Diego Comic Con isn’t until July. This must be a local con in Calgary.

:smack: Oh…well never mind, then. :stuck_out_tongue:

::Looks out window:: Hmm, it’s cold and snowing in San Diego - San Diego sucks.

Pics please!

It’s snowing there still?! I was just at a BBQ, wearing a t-shirt, and had to keep the puppy from eating daffodils.

Ah, such is life on the paradise of Vancouver Island!

We haven’t got them yet - they’re supposed to be available today. Did I mention the incredible level of disorganization?

My alternative answer is, go stand in line for four hours and get your own pics!

Sounds like you had a great time! Bring your photos to the Calgary Dopefest next week–we’d get a kick out of seeing them.

A co-worker is from Vulcan* and took work off Friday to attend the celebrations there that Leonard Nimoy attended. I didn’t see her in the TV news coverage, but knowing her, she got to meet him somehow. I’ll look forward to hearing about her experience, too.

*Note to non-locals–Vulcan is the name of a small town in Alberta. It was named long before Star Trek existed, but they’ve made the most out of the connection: murals of Star Trek characters on the buildings, and a large model of the Enterprise. Paramount Pictures has generally been very good about allowing all this, but Leonard Nimoy has helped the town in its relations with Paramount when necessary.

I heard about the Vulcan event; it occurred to me later that night that I could have driven out for it. :smack:

It occurred to me today that I want to see Brent Spiner talk today, but we did not buy a two-day pass. Sigh.

I’d like to go to one of these sometime. Haven’t read comics much in the last 20 years, but it would be fun to just walk around and see the sights…maybe meet somebody famous.

I haven’t kept up with comics for decades, either, and my husband never has. There was lots there for other kinds of sci-fi geeks, though. We’ll definitely be going to more in the future.

Yes, this is my feeling too. I’ve never been much on superhero comics, which I’ve always thought of these events as being centered around; but I have been enjoying a few of the non-superhero graphic novels: the Sandman, Fables, Lucifer, and V for Vendetta, for example. Might be fun to go someday and just see what’s there.

Besides which, in the midst of the preple dressed as Storm Troopers, Enterprise crewmembers, Klingons, and Star Wars characters; I’d love to find out if anybody has enough nerve to go as one of the “Pigs in Spaaace!”

Did you see a Wolverine with real metal claws? My wifes cousin wanted me to help him make some claws outa wood but of course “Go Big Or Go Home”. Took me a bit to figure it out but they looked pretty good. Welding isnt my thing so that part was hard but it was a neat project. Now I’m onto a miniature roman soldier for my son. I just might have bitten off too much this time… Instructable here http://tinyurl.com/25m4xfg

The only Wolverine there sort of looked like someone’s degenerate uncle. There were many, many cool costumes, though. And apparently some of the cosplay people live in our neighbourhood, because we saw one of them getting out of her car last night and a couple of them walking down the same street today.

Well, my brother-in-law has picked up our picture for us - now we just have to get it from him.

Lots of cool costumes. I was happy to get my picture with Richard and meeting Lar and Sohmer. I loved the couple dressed up as Dream and Death. Skipped the line for Nimoy, though I saw him from a distance as we wandered past while he was signing.

My inner geek is sated, though I got some info from one booth about Geek tours… and they are planning one for Dragon Con. Hmmm…

Peace at last: Boba Fett and Chewbacca try to fix a very primitive warp drive together at Calgary Con.
