My watch winder came

I like watches – especially automatic ones. Unfortunately I have too many to keep them wound. If I want to wear a watch for more than a day or so, I need to be sure that I wind the others. One of them must be worn to be wound, as it does not have a manual wind function. Sometimes I like to wear my Seiko Sports 100 Chronograph; for instance when I’m kayaking, because it’s not as “nice” as the others. (That one is quartz, BTW.) This throws off the schedule. And sometimes I like to wear my Hamilton Ventura (quartz) watch. (Best comment: “Dude, that’s a trippy watch!”)

So now I have a winder on which I’ve put my four “neatest” autos. It’s not fancy; it’s just one like jewelers use in their shops. The watches go round and round, and spin on spindles to keep the rotors turning. It randomly chooses a direction, and stops turning to “rest” so as not to overwind the watches. Then it starts up again.

Finally I can choose a watch without having to plan ahead.

Congrats Johnny!

But what is it with winders being so costly? I haven’t been able to find one for less than about US$150, and one could buy a TV and a microwave oven for that much. And winders aren’t that complicated.

Anyway, at least now you can put you watch on in the morning without having to do the weird watch shake/dance. Me, I’ll still be dancing!

I wear my Omega Seamaster Chronometer Professional every day, and for everything.

I wind it by running five miles.

knocking on the bathroom door

“What are you doing in there?”

“Um… Winding my watch!”

Nice watch. Blue, or black? Did you see the James Bond commemorative Seamaster?

Now ain’t that a coincidence. Same here.

A co-worker noticed my 1961 Rolex Submariner on the “James Bond” NATO strap. He thought about getting one, but decided he liked the Omaga Seamaster better. From the way he’s talking, it sounds like he’ll be sporting a new blue Seamaster any time now.

I really like the Seamaster (except that the skeletonized hands seem too short to me), but I’d rather get a manual-wind Speedmaster first. I’m a space nut, and I like the connection to the space program.

Mine’s the blue face with the chronometer. The James Bond version doesn’t have the chronometer.

I’ve had it for 5 years or so.
