My Willys is gone!

Only temporarily. I took it to Midas for brakes today, and they wanted to keep it a couple of days to be sure they got the right parts and that they get the job done right. I guess they don’t stock parts for 55-year-old vehicles!

I need to get it painted. It’s olive drab right now, and everyone thinks it’s an “army jeep”. What do you think? Pasture Green with Michigan Yellow wheels? Harvest Tan with black (instead of the traditional Harvard Red) wheels? Picket Grey? (Nah, people would think it’s a Navy jeep!) Maybe a non-original colour? Cream with black wheels and windshield? Michigan Yellow with black wheels and windshield? Not that I can afford to paint it in the near future, but I should plan ahead…

From your thread title I was afraid you had lost a very important body part.

Black & red Zebra stripes, man!

Iconoclastic & cool.

Johnny,

I would go with the Normandy Blue. My TJ is “Patriot Blue” which is almost the same color. I had the tough decision to make when I got my Jeep last year, but most of the people I asked (read: girls) liked the blue.

If you don’t like blue, my second choice is Luzon Red, I think that looks pretty sharp.

As for the wheels, I lean towards some kind of silver or chrome color.
Tony

Flamin’ yellow, dude! But then again, I’m weird with car colours, or so I’m told.

Fine set of wheels, BTW. It’s my favourite 4WD, together with the vintage Land Rovers.

Interesting colour choices… I’m kinda leaning to the “John Deere” scheme – Pasture Green with Michigan Yellow wheels – even though the Pasture Green kinda looks like O.D. Or the Harvest Tan. I thought about Normandy Blue, but I don’t think it would look “right” even though it’s an original colour. (But I something like Deep Amythist – like my XJ – would look good on a TJ.) I also thought about the Luzon Red, but I’m not very keen on red cars. The last CJ2A I owned, a '48, was tan and I kinda liked it.

I want to keep it original, and the only original tops available are olive drab. Some body colours just “won’t go” with an O.D. top. This would be so much easier if I had bought a CJ3B! Little did I know that CJ2As were becoming “collectible” when I bought it.

Black and red zebra stripes??? I suppose matching fake sheepskin seat covers as well?

Hey Coldie, why don’t you see about getting an MB (WWII model) and restore it? You can drive it in the May 5th parade. I’m thinking of driving the CJ to the Dopefest in a couple of weeks. I’ve attended Dopefests on my Yamaha, in my Cherokee, and by foot; I should drive the Willys to the next one. I like vintage Land Rovers too. And the FJ40 Land Cruiser. I’d buy the Toyota before I’d get the Rover though. Reliability.

Oh, that WOULD be nice. However: parking permits in Amsterdam are one per household. If that, in some places. And quite frankly, the Peugeot’s probably gonna serve more kilometers than the Willys!

Luckily, the Diversion I’m planning to buy doesn’t need a parking permit as it has only two wheels.

My brother has a '73 CJ-(something) which he’s painted orange with black trim. Not Day-Glo or blaze, just a dark orange that almost looks red in the dark. Damn that looks sharp - MUCH better than the yellow ones I see all over the place.

Johnny, you better bring the Willys… I’ve been dying to see it. I’ll get some pictures of it up for the next L.A. Dopefest page. Hell, I’ll make it the title graphic, if you want.

dude-- I was actually pretty worried-- I thought you got it stolen…

chique: That would be a CJ-5, which were built from 1954 - 1983 (with the “long-nose” version appearing in 1972).

Johnny,

Not to hijack your thread, but I am moving down to Rancho Cucamonga (I can’t say that enough) in a couple of months from San Jose, and want to know of any good Jeep supply stores or off-road places down there. Also if you know of any trails that are Jeep friendly. I am a novice with the whole Jeep ownership/ offroading thing, but I feel as though I should at least take it off of the pavement a couple of times to see what it can do.

Thanks for the help.

(I am assuming you know the L.A. area from you name, but if not feel free to ignore me.)

Tony

We demand PICTURES OF JOHNNY’S WILLY[sub]s[/sub]!

NEON GREEN! NEON GREEN!

Ask, and ye shall receive.

Pstarr: I don’t know Rancho Cucamonga, but I do know a place to get off road a little. There is an “Off Highway Discovery Trail” near Santa Clarita. Take I-5 north to the 14 (Antelope Valley Freeway). Get off on Sierra Highway. There’s an exit not too far after you go over the hill from the 5. Go north on Sierra Highway and eventually the buildings will become sparse. On the left there will be a brown and white sign that directs you to the Rowher Flats OHV area. Follow the dirt road to Rowher Flats. If there has been rain, look out for puddles and mud – otherwise you may miss them. See the ranger at Rowher Flats for a trail map. Exit the staging area and turn left. Go around behind the staging area and follow the road (which will be on the map). Watch out for motorcyclists. They will usually signal the number of bikes following them. By following the trail you will eventually wind up on Boquet Canyon Road. From there you can turn left to get back to the 5, or you can turn right. This will take you to Palmdale and you can pick up the 14 there.

It’s a pretty easy trail. I drive on it with my Cherokee after it rains. I do slip a bit in the mud, but I have the stock Goodyear Wranglers on it still. Good road for a novice (and I am by no means a hard-core off-roader). I took a wrong turn last time and had to back down the trail. That earned me a scratch on the side of the Cherokee. I might have been able to make it, but the two-foot drop-off was more than I wanted to try in my daily driver. There are tougher trails there that are still condidered “easy”. You might want to check out the Jeeps Unlimited Wrangler Forum to see if anyone is going up there.

Why, that’s the most amazing Willy[sub]s[/sub] I’ve ever seen, and quite probably the largest…(I knew you wanted to hear that).

And very cool, too. Please give us “after” pics, too, when available…

I’m really impressed that you’re going from 9" to 11"! For god’s sake, don’t tell Wildest Bill…

I say you paint the thing in New England Lapis. It’s a really cool colour and it’s kinda sexy in such an interesting and nice model.

Hey man, what is your screenname on JU?

My brother once owned a pair of Willys pickups, a green '59 and a '49 in some sort of camouflage. Why not go with a patriotic scheme? Some combination of red, white & blue?

Hey, do you drive that thing on a daily basis? How many miles are on it?

It’s really cool. I vote for navy blue or deep green.
