My Xbox360 Is Fried?

I haven’t even been able to play it that long!

Here’s what happens:

I want to play a DVD, put it in the tray, shut the tray, it boots up the beginning menu of the movie, but won’t play it.

The green “X” button keeps flashing and won’t stop.

It DOES play cd’s though.

It won’t let me move through all its sections.

In other words, NONE of the buttons on the remote work.

All that works is the button on the front which opens the tray, and it continually says “open tray”, “close tray”.

There is no “red circle of death”.

I’ve been all over the net and found such weird “fixes” like “open it up and do this or that” (way over my head); take a hair dryer and at its coolest setting blow into the tray hole; and the biggie: Hit on top right after the disc enters into the unit.

Also read, “don’t set it up vertically/horizontally”.

“Don’t plug it into a surge strip”

It is no longer under warranty and I found a guy here locally who fixes them for 50 bucks.

Any ideas, my friends?

Thanks

Quasi

Have you tried changing the batteries in the remote?

Yup

Well whatever is wrong, it can’t be that it’s broken. You see, as has been pointed out many times here on the dope, consoles are made of magical mystery stuff which never has any issues.
Unlike PC’s which apparently break if you look at them.

You have tried different DVD’s too, right? And you have no issues with games, correct?

Have you tried to re-sync the controller?

edit: In case you haven’t had to do it before, there is a little button at the top of your controller near the memory slot. There’s another little button on the front of your 360 console. Turn on the console and the controller, then push both little buttons. Everything should sync back together.

All I can think is that when my PS2 and/or PC used to do this, ultimately being able to play CDs and not DVDs was a sign of a failing optical drive (or at least, failure on the part of the bits that provide power to the laser diode assembly.

That oughta be a cheap fix if that’s what it is.

It was a cheap fix, Zeriel and Terraplane? You just saved me $50.00, my friend. If I hadn’t checked in with you, I sure would have taken it to be fixed and I don’t know if the guy would have been honest enough no to take my money.

Thanks from the bottom of my heart!

Glad it worked.

Console magic FTW again.

This is what the Dope is all about! People helping people!

Yeah, I’m guessing you accidentally poked the sync button before. Last time you’ll make that mistake, though.

Nice to see the 360 caught up with early 1990s wireless mice in that regard, I gotta say.

You say that like syncing them up is a hassle.

Considering that all “modern” mice come with their own special receiver unit that you have to plug in, I think this comparison is ridiculous and unfair. Essentially they are synched at the factory to their matching USB plugin widget.

Naw, I’m just amused to hear about it, since I’ve never seen it happen on a console in person.

At LANs, when things aren’t set up yet and people want to play, people have to do the controller sync dance, so I’ve seen it a few times.

Ah, the typical LAN I go to has one repeat one X360 and that’s solely for Rock Band tourneys anyway.

Yeah, the LANs I go to are 99% 360s. There’s a table of people playing World of Warcraft, a 360 set up for Rock Band, and everything else is a 360.

Games are playing! Went and rented FableII and I’m learning how to work the controls…

Thanks
