Myst III:Exile is tearing me apart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never start threads in here but Myst III is pissing me off more than any program I’ve ever had- and I’m not even in the game yet!!!

The stupid thing is so buggy that I can’t even get it to run on my very normal, Windows 98 computer. I’ve downloaded their patches and upgraded my drivers, but nothing will work!

And I’m not alone! I see that many people are struggling to get this game to work on their nice, normal computers. How can they release a game like this?

I double-click on the icon to start it and it gives an immediate error! It doesn’t even start to load the game! I hate it! If I could get into it and see specificaly what is wrong, maybe it would help! But no! I hate, hate, hate, hate this game!

I have never had trouble loading anything on this computer in the year and a half I’ve had it. I far exceed all requirements for the game(but not so far as to snuff it).

What pisses me off is that I thought it would work so easily. Both Myst and Riven were complicated(for their day) games that ran flawlessly on the minimun requirement computers they came out for. The Miller brothers stop working on Myst and BAM, the game gets all complicated to work.

I hate it. Here is my general question post that explains the problem in more detail if you are interested.

Here’s the discusssion link from just after the game was released. Please take note of my input.

I haven’t had a bit of trouble running it. Didn’t even download the patches. Seems folks are one extreme or the other on this one - no one has “just a little” trouble.

I have managed to complete Exile; however, I did experience several game crashes. The most common crash I encountered was during the credits; even the slightest mouse movement would cause an error. I also experienced several crashes within the game–for example, if I tried to select Edanna as the first age to explore, the game would close itself.

Even if I am able to play the game without any crashes, the computer will freeze about 5 to 15 minutes later, and I receive a “Demo32” error.

I haven’t tried any of the patches, but I think Mahaloth is right–the game is basically a bundle o’ bugs. I don’t think the bugs are limited to just one platform either, judging from the posts I’ve seen at various Exile message boards.

Wow, Jeep, I know what you mean. Even though I’ve never even gotten one second into the game, I get the Demo error sometimes 20 minutes after I closed the program!

Here is the kicker, though.

I’m pretty much resolved to the fact that unless the company gives me some magical advice that fixes it(not likely), I will never play the game. Well, I can live with that. I could always buy it 3 years from now when it’s 15-25 bucks and I have a different computer.

I can’t get a refund or exchange it for a game of equal value. Yeah, we bought it online at Outpost.com, but most stores run their policy this way. If it’s opened(which it has to be to install it), they won’t exchange it.

I remind you, this is a birthday gift to me too. I’m more saddened by the fact that it was a gift than the fact I can’t play it. I mean, if I bought it for myself I’d just scream and pout about the bugs.

But this was a gift.

I’m telling you, folks. Don’t buy Myst III:Exile. I know quite a bit about computers and know that mine is very normal and I have put huge complicated programs on it without any trouble. I have always been able to fix bugs before, though I rarely have any.

This game is simply not finished. They released it in an incomplete form. I’m sure the game itself is quality, but the programing sucks.

It’s a shame, really.
