It’s probably an artwork, but we should probably find out if it’s transmitting a signal to Jupiter.
Yes, I’m aware that this object is metallic, and therefore not actually a monolith.

The Seattle monolith was also metallic, but everyone thought it was a monolith all the same. The problem with this one is it’s not the right dimensions.
I think the desolate setting is part of what’s inviting the 2001 comparisons. If this thing showed up in an urban area, we probably wouldn’t be hearing about it.
I imagine that if the artist comes forward, he/she will say that it wasn’t intended as a Kubrick homage.
The Greek word for metal is pretty much metal. This is some sort of monomet monument.
What kind of stone was the 2001 monolith made of?

They’re refusing to say exactly where it is. The reason, they say, is that they’re afraid that a lot of people are going to try to visit the spot themselves, and many of these will get lost and need rescuing.
It’s in “Red Rock Country”, which covers an awful lot of area in the east and southeast of Utah.
From the images, it appears that the top of the thing is tilted, presumably to let water and snow drain off. It has some thickness to it, but doesn’t seem to have the proportions of the monolith in either the movies or Clarke’s novels.

I also thought of this.
Alas, not stone, but two tons of carved acrylic. It was repurposed (defaced, really) for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977.
Pretty much, but with helicopter pilots and goat counters instead of pithecanthropoids.
That was just the movie prop though, not the real one.
