Are there any real books that exist or that have existed that resemble the book “The 9 Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows,” which is of course a made up book seen in Roman Polanski’s “The Ninth Gate?” It would be very interesting to learn about any books that have mysterious pasts or hidden secrets. Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.
The Egyption book of the dead might interest you.
Or The Necronomicon, if you can locate a copy. Apparently it hasn’t been seen since the 30’s-40’s, when all known copies vanished. Now that’s mysterious.
Or, it never existed and was actually a creation of HP Lovecraft.
Or, you could read the cite, and stamp out a little ingorance:
Why did the novelist H.P. Lovecraft claim to have invented the Necronomicon?
Dex hadthis to say about the Necronomicon.
What are you all crazy? Of course it exists! Why it’s for sale on Amazon right now for $7.99!!
One of the Amazon customer reviewers, “hlp2”, sheds some light:
That’s some admission; “Aw shucks, it’s true, I didn’t commit plagiarism”. In court, that’s called a self serving statement. What did you expect.
Besides, if it’s true, it makes Francois Lenormant (Science Occult; La Magie chez les Chaldeens, 1874) a freeking psychic, because he discusses The Necronomicon in that book, 16 years before Lovecraft was even born. Explain that!
Quotation please?
I suppose pointing out to Fear Itself that Abdul Al Hazred can not be real because it is not proper Arabic nomenclature is pointless…
Some links to look at:
Clavicula Salomonis (don’t miss the illustrations!)
Enjoy!
I bought a copy of the Necronomicon** years ago, and the other night I had a bat in my room. Coincidence!? I wish!
Yog-Sothoth farked up my coding.
Don’t personally have a copy of this, but they are available, should you be so inclined.
Many more here, now that I get looking around.
Anyone who would mix Latin and Greek in their book’s title should be thrown to the shoggoths…
Since this is about books, I’ll move this thread to our arts forum, Cafe Society.
Phylarchis of Naucratis wrote a book called Agraphos (c. 300 BC I think) from whose title (The Unwritten) most scholars guess that it was a compendium of myths and stories not recorded elsewhere. We have only the title. None of the text has survived. Why do you want this stuff, jayjam? Mysterious books could fill a library or two…
Hmm…can we have some quotations?
His proper name is Abdul “The Mad Arab” Al Hazred, but he preferred to be called Abdul “I just get these headaches” Al Hazred.
Sorry. Please continue
