I am owned by cats, so when we discovered in the house a healthy toad then another time a healthy baby turtle I had to point my claw at the cats for bringing these animals Into the house.
Cleanlyness. Oh wait. I’ve never found that.
I’m guessing no godliness, either.
Nor Love and Compassion.
Yet I have an original boxed game of Yahtzee, with the little red and white chips.
Yahtzee pairs very nicely with tequila!
(or so I’m told)
What doesn’t?
We found two things in our house, but they fall more into unexpected than mysterious.
We lifted a corner of the 40 yr old carpeting, before buying, to confirm it was hardwood beneath. When we finally lifted the carpet, maybe two weeks after moving in, we discovered beautiful cheery inlays in both the entry hall and what was the living room. They are amazing and the carpet preserved them beautifully! What luck!
We did some renos in the entry hall and the contractor couldn’t figure why his screw wasn’t catching, no matter where he drove it in. Finally we gave him go ahead to yank some wallboard down so we could see. And there was a perfectly intact transom window above what was the original exterior door. A small enclosed sunroom/porch had been added, and now only a view of insulation was seen. We had it closed back in as we’re keeping the porch. But it’s kinda cool to know it’s in there, still in pristine condition.
We found a Victorian locked steel safe in a derelict shed six months after moving into our new old house. Quite exciting to imagine what treasures are locked within.
I found a Topps 1951 redback baseball card in a crevice in my house. Unfortunately, I tore it as I pulled it out, so it’s not worth much.
We found a shed when we moved in. The estate agent description had actually specified that there was a shed, but when we viewed the house (several times) we didn’t see one, and frankly we weren’t bothered, so didn’t give it much thought. The garden/yard was so overgrown that it had just enveloped the shed - we found it some time after we moved in.

Yeah, this violates the “previous owner” stipulation, but too bad…
Trash cans with lids. No, that’s not the mysterious part. Inside each lid in big magic marker is written 10-91. Based on other things around the house, we figure it’s when they bought the trash cans. Similar date markings were on a clock radio and a snow shovel.
The mystery is why would anyone feel compelled to put a date inside a trash can lid? They were a truly odd couple.
Yesterday, while cleaning out a kitchen drawer, I found a shock collar for a very small dog. It was obviously used, as the canvas part of the collar was very worn.
My family never owned a very small dog. And no one else has ever lived in this house.
This post deserves acknowledgement.
mmm
There’s a locked metal box, about 2 x 1.5 x 0.5 ft., mounted high on the wall above an upstairs bathroom door in the house we recently moved into.
If curiosity becomes unbearable, I may have to break in to see what’s inside.
I found a human head in a old well.
We need to hear lots, lots more about this. I would say “cough up the details, Beck”, but that would be in poor taste.
My brother found a silver “half dime” embedded in a staircase. It had a 19th century was in poor condition. A coin dealer offered him five cents.
@BippityBoppityBoo, I have a thread about it. If I wasn’t so addled I’d link it.
“A bad, bad, bad headcase”
Perhaps that under-the-stairway space was used for a desk and the sharpener would be quite accessible from a sitting position.
Here you go:
