mysterious "throbbing" house

it could very well be something close by vibrating the ground. at one job I had (test lab) we had a vibration shaker which was quite massive and coupled to the concrete floor. when we were doing vibration sine sweeps certain frequencies could be felt a couple of buildings away.

Nitpick: The largest guns ever placed on naval vessels were 18" on the Japanese battleships Musashi and Yamato. The largest the U.S. ever placed on battleships were 16". Destroyers typically carried 5" guns, but I am betting you meant 20mm guns.

OK this is ANECDOTAL. Take it or leave it.

I believe in the paranormal after witnessing it. I have been in a very old apartment building where there were sudden temperature drops, light switches turned on and off “by themselves” water faucets would turn on, radios and televisons would turn on and off by themselves. Nothing violent ever happened like stuff flying around.

Like I said, it is anecdotal, so take it or leave it, I do not have proof or a cite.

As above (and experienced by me):
1.power plant nearby
2.wind

You do realize wgwilson last posted one day after starting this thread on 4/23/09, right?

So we get two new-join drive-by postings in one thread! It’s like a deal!

Seriously tho, **pdxmomma **- check your sump pump, check it with the power off to see if it’s coming through the wires, and check it against the prevailing winds in your area to see if it’s wind turbulence.

The house ate him?

/edges away scared

At least the person that bumped it (more or less) acknlodged that it was a zombie thread.

Here’s my anecdote. I was hearing a similar sound. Though I was lucky in that if I walked outside I could hear it out there also, as well as the general direction that it was coming from. Also, I couldn’t hear it over any kind of background noise like the TV or dishwasher. I finally asked someone about it and it turns out it was the worlds largest (at 5 stories) counter blow hammer. When the weather is right I can hear it from my house a few miles away. I assume they use time-of-day electricity and around here it’s about half price during the off peak time so that’s probably why they do it at night. Though I’m surprised. If I can hear it from as far away as I am, it must be awful for the people that live a few hundred feet away.

Do you have a gas hot water heater, by any chance?

Why would he need to heat up already hot water?

As to the zombie’s dilemma, Indian burial ground?

There was an Outer Limits episode which also had a throbbing house. The people in it were being kept prisoner by a monster in the attic. Later, it turned into a brain, and then vanished! Anecdotal. Check attic.

Borrow an bat detector from your nearest nature educational program or nature reserve. A bat detector makes nearly inaudible sounds audible, and by fiddling with it you can discover at what Herz frequency your sound is most audible. That may help in diagnosing what exactly is the problem.

For instance, when I make an evening walk with a bat detector, I hear bats, fighting mice, (usually too high to hear) but also the sound of heavy motorized ships on a river in the far distance.
