Mythologies

Is it really more appropriate in this MB forum to ask about specific Christian mythological points than about where trolls hung out before there were bridges?

Where are all you Wiccan types? Let’s get this question answered. If I head my thread “Not a Troll”, does that permit it to stay in GQ?

Ray (Gotta figure which of these guys’ buttons to click on.)

They hung out underground or in caves in Scandinavia.

troll 2 n. (in Scandinavian folklore) any of a race of supernatural beings, usu. hostile to humans, who live underground or in caves. (Webster’s)

trolls – Often this word refers to all the mythical beings, but there really is a distinction. Trolls, which belong to a distant past, are huge and grotesque, may only have a single eye in the middle of their forehead, and very often have three heads. They are terribly strong but are also stupid and are easily tricked by a quick-witted person. They abhor the sounds of churchbells and they have a predilection for eating human flesh. Their homeland was the dark, ice-covered land of Trollebotn, the huge frozen bay which was assumed to connect Greenland to north of Scandinavia. Gyger (or Gjöger) are female trolls, giantesses. http://www.stst.net/Scandinavian/Folklore/

Troll (Icelandic/Scandinavian):
(Icelandic) Malignant one-eyed giants.
(Scandinavian) Dwarfs, some cunning and treacherous, some fair and good to men. They were skilled in working metals. http://www.cybercomm.net/~grandpa/mythcreatures2.html

I’ve never heard that trolls were anyhow related to Wicca. I’m sure everyone saw the fish hook graphic you had on the question, also.

I’m not sure what a “Wiccan type” is but I don’t comprehend what Wicca has to do with trolls? Are you Wiccan?

I have a hobby. I have the world’s largest collection of seashells. I keep it scattered on beaches all over the world. Maybe you’ve seen some of it.

Well, I guess I got more here than I can ever digest (or whatever you do with this sort of thing). I didn’t realize trolls were supposed to be big 'uns. No wonder there are so many troll-værer posters and official muddle-raiders around here.

No, I’m no Wiccan, no way – just wicked. Glad to learn about that conservation of “the good” stuff – due to its finite extent. Thus I stand exonerated for using deviltry in the interest of such conservation. (Just because Satan hasn’t been doing his share lately. Oh, hi, Satan, what’s the latest value of pi? )

No, I don’t know what mythology goes with what religion or whatever else. The real world alone seems to have more than I can handle. Interestingly, there isn’t enough going on in either reality or known fantasy these days for some people, so they invent their own languages, and cultures to go with them, thereby further adding to all our confusion. Hey, I thought the I’net was supposed to bring about commonality.

Ray (He used to be good all the time. . .until he used it all up.)

I guess “troll-værer” should’ve been ‘troll-frykter’. I was just fooling around with an online English-Norwegian dictionary. I found a better one.
