n-CASE Alert?

i just got a dialog box this morning when i turned on my computer. it says:

has anyone else ever had this problem. does this mean i have a virus?

No, you want n-CASE gone! It’s spyware.

well, how did n-CASE get on my computer if i don’t have a virus? if i clicked the option to uninstall n-CASE on the dialog box itself, is it and anything that might’ve come with it completely gone?

Beats me. I’d follow the removal instructions jsut to be sure, and maybe even run Adaware and Spybot, in case you have any other malware lurking in the background.

Spyware is often installed not via viruses, but during the installation of free software such as several P2P clients.

Quite so. Also, remember you cannot have your cake and eat it too, in many cases. Many such programs will refuse to run after you remove the malware that was installed with them.

gypsymoth3 go here for more info on n-sync:

To be fair, you can also get stealth installs from certain pop-ups provided that yo uare using IE and your browser security settings are not configured to block site from executing Active-X components and the like.

A common progression is that you will get Gator software, then one of the gator partners will install a memory meter or n-Case or coupon book or some other spyware. If you get the really nasty ones, you’ll need more than spybot or ad-aware. you’ll also need software like Process Explorer and 2xExplorer to finally get clean.

Strategies going forward:

  1. Configure your security settings to at least prompt you before running anything.
  2. Place IP addresses of the known spyware domains to your hosts file resolved to loopback.
  3. Schedule your spyware removal software for regular runs as you would your anti-virus software.

Hope this helps!

But what he/she doesn’t like N-Sync, and is more a 98 Degrees fan?

** Psifireus**, i don’t like nsync and your link doesn’t work.

also, for anyone who might know how to deal with this crap, my mom installed the stupid nCASE thing this morning because i hadn’t told her what it was. i’ve searched the computer for any files with n-CASE in their titles and didn’t find anythin; so i ran SpyBot just n-CASE. (stupid joke, i know.) i’ve been getting popups that have little target sign looking things and say “save” for their name on the taskbar. is this something n-CASE is doing? and how might i be sure it’s not still affecting my computer.

MY version of Ad-Aware was completely blind to n-Case. Took me awhile to get rid of it.

gypsymoth3 Sorry about the typo…(N-sync?) I have a 12-year old, maybe that’s where that came from…

Anyway, I think Revtim fixed my link…(Thanks) plus the link Q.E.D posted was the same anyway…

(So many mistakes…so little time…)
