"Spyware Strike" malware - help!

So, I’ve been away for the weekend; housemate’s been using the computer. He clicks some link he shouldn’t have, and now there is some malware affecting my machine. (He has apologized immensely.) There is a new program called “Spyware Strike 2.5” installed (which actually uninstalled) and some links to a website to buy the upgrade. After deleting the links and uninstalling the program, it appearantly has mucked up enough with my system to be sending me false system warnings of all kinds. Little guys impersonating actual MS warnings in the system tray and the occasional popup warning. Wanna guess what happens when the warnings are clicked? That’s right: they take you to a website to buy this product.

My housemate updated and ran Norton AntiVirus before I got back; I re-updated it and am in the middle of sweeping right now.

Anyone have any experience with this crap? Will NAV fix this? Did you need to download a remover or something? (I’ve tried to search through Norton and Window’s help pages, but I can’t find any info.)

Thanks
-Geek

p.s. just got another popup warning.

Try Lavasoft AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, described in this thread:

Fantastic! Thanks, Revtim and Gut!

Norton did not work. Windows is not expected to make a patch until tomorrow, I think. I might just log for the night and hope this is on the road to being fixed tomorrow.

I’ll check back in later.

Ugh, I got hit with that at work today. SmitRem should take care of it, here is the author’s page with instructions: http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/

…and thanks to jethroskull’s link, I am now free!

Problem solved! Thanks again, gang.
