While discussing the various heath risk of sushi with I freind, I related an article I read about the questionable practice of eating shushi off of the body of a naked woman. My friend was completely incredulous, and I’m not keen on him thinking that I made the whole thing up. Does anyone know what the heck its called or know of a web site that has info on it?
I have tried to look it up with no sucess, as Dave Barry would say, Naked Sushi is an excellent name for a rock band.
I don’t think it is so much “a practice” but rather a gimmick thought up by one restaurant. I found some references to it being a Japanese tradition but Baglady (who is Japanese) had never heard of it.
Here is reference to a German restaurant that was doing it:
This reminds me of a passage from M.F.K. Fisher’s The Gastronomical Me, of a young German man eating grapes and bread off the body of a Czech girl… and the confrontation between Madame Fisher and the German. Quite an interesting chapter, and may bring in a little insight to this whole… eating off of naked flesh.
I saw a one-page blurb on it while flipping through a copy of Maxim Magazine. I’d guess that this was circa-November 1999.
The photo showed an overhead view of a japanese woman in Geisha makeup lying serenely on a table with her eyes closed. She appeared to be naked, and small sushi arrangements dotted various portions of her anatomy, including, sadly, the naughty bits. Hands from out-of-frame diners with chopsticks hover over her.
The one-paragraph caption explained something to the effect that it was a popular (but expensive-- I believe the article quoted a price of up to $1500 US per person) offering at several upscale restaurants in Japan. It explained that it was considered the ultimate act of subservience, and that the woman was expected to lay perfectly still for the entire meal, which could often last several hours. The caption alleged that the women would train themselves with ice cubes to avoid reacting to stimuli, and would undergo an extensive regimen of bathing and shaving in preparation. I believe the article alleged that some women could earn six figure incomes from it.
While I wouldn’t necessarily suggest that Maxim is a particularly reliable source, I present it for what it’s worth.
“common” is almost certainly an exageration. They do have some kinky resturants around Tokyo, (especially in Shinjuku) and it wouldn’t suprise me if something that decadant showed up in one or two very expensive resturants, but it’s not something you’d be able to order just anywhere.
Brings a whole new meaning to “take out” food, though . . .
It’s like that “panties in vending machines” thing. It happens, but it’s not the norm.
