Georges Clemenceau & Albert of Belgium.
First that came to mind was T. E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia
Another vote for Archduke Franz Ferdinand, except in my head it’s always “Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 was the catalyst for WWI” as stated in my middle school history books. Second would be Kaiser Wilhem, whom I don’t remember many details about but mostly think of his image with that helmet on his head. Reading everyone else’s responses I recognize / remember those names but would not have thought of them myself.
This.
Kaiser Soze.
Just kidding. Archduke Ferdinand is the only one I would have thought of unless I had ample time to think about it.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
They should name those guys who die at the beginning of the movie but are pivotal to it after him.
Huh. My first thoughts were the Kaiser (main bad guy) and Woodrow Wilson (main guy from my country). Certainly others are interesting and sort of come to mind, but in a way like, “Okay, there was that dude that shot that other dude, you know, the anarchist jerk who shot some Austrian royal or something like that, what were their names?”
Which is extra embarrassing, because it was last week that I finished reading a novel about Princep’s assassination of Ferdinand.
Off the top of my head, and without reading any previous responses:
General “Black Jack” Pershing
Sergeant Alvin York
Mata Hari
Baron Von Richthofen (the Red Baron)
Manfred and Lothar von Richthofen, Pershing, Harry Truman and a lot of others. You also have to include most of the Nazi leadership in the list as well. Throw in maybe Hemingway and Faulkner as well. I recall there was a reasonably famous poet but the name escapes me at the moment.
Not mentioned that I’ve seen so far, but for me came to mind right after Archduke Ferdinand and the Kaiser - Field Marshall Haig.
Wilfred Owen sprang to mind. But then I’m an effete ponce of an Englishman, so no surprise there.
Me too.
Field Marshall John French, who was British, just like on Family Affair.
Cheers for the replies.
There was also a German general called Francois.
I also think straight away of Lord Kitchener because of this British recruitment poster, on which the famous Uncle Sam poster was based.
Mostly all Canadians for me:
Sam Hughes
Arthur Currie
Whatsisface Byng
and
Billy Bishop, the greatest of all time. ALL TIME!
Blackjack Pershing
George Patton
Erwin Rommel
Robert Graves.
Hey!
What am I, chopped liver?
Nah, I’m just yanking your chain. I don’t blame anyone for not reading that particular post. ![]()
I liked that post a lot. Very thoughtful.
Of course, it got swept up in the vast impersonal name-dropping thread.
