Name a little-known movie that deserves more recognition

Another movie worthy of some recognition is “9” (Nine), a movie about nine “rag dolls” (given the spark of life by their inventor), who have formed themselves into a small community, surviving in the aftermath of war. I have this movie on DVD and liked it quite a bit.

I looked the look of 9. But the protagonist would have done better by staying home.

The Matchmaker with Janeane Garofalo and a bunch of good Irish actors with small bits by Saffron Burrows and Denis Leary.

She’s gotta go to Nowhere, Ireland to look up the family history of a Senator in re-election trouble. Matchmaking ensues.

Triple bonus points: The Pogues Haunted is in the soundtrack.

I think the joke was about her accent.

I think she has a permanent meet & greet location in Walt Disney World and pops up regularly in Disneyland. She’s included in every list of Disney Princesses, since she officially is one.

You know who aren’t official Disney Princesses? Elsa & Anna (they’re their own franchise). Just thought that was interesting.

I remember that. Charming little film. Garofalo was quite good. What do you think happened to her film career? I mean, she was a lot more appealing than Uma Thurman in The Truth About Cats And Dogs.

The Guilty 2018 Danish film, which was remade recently with Jake Gyllenhaal (haven’t seen the Hollywood version).

IMDB describes it as: A police officer assigned alarm dispatch duty enters a race against time when he answers an emergency call from a kidnapped woman.

Rivetting stuff, very low budget and almost entirely based at one desk, never mind one location.

She’d be on my list for a thread of actors that deserve more recognition.

Which leads me to submit Clay Pigeons - Wikipedia a thriller with Joaquin Pheonix and a creepy Vince Vaughan.

I found that one a lot of fun. Definitely, verging on the fluff side, but it has a couple of good things to say about what a nation of immigrants is.

Seriously! Uma Thurman was a total drip and a bore.

Is there any other kind?

Miscasting. She’s been excellent in several other things I’ve seen.

Well, yes. I meant the character not the actress.

I knew what you meant; sorry. Sometimes our language is sorely wanting.

This was one of the oddest movies. Wait, Uma Thurman is supposed to the beauty and Garofalo the, um, non-beauty???

I seem to remember a scene where Garofalo was posing for a photo shoot. Had to shift in my seat, slightly. And I think she was wearing jeans and a sweater!

Lots of great films mentioned.

I will nominate Disorganized Crime from 1989

Four bank robbers, who do not know each other, show in a Montana town for a job they know nothing about/ It was set up by a thief they all know and respect, but he is not there. Unbeknownst to them, he has been arrested, escaped, and arrested again.

Corbin Bernsen, Fred Gwynne, Ruben Blades, William Russ and Lou Diamond Phillips are the robbers. Ed O’Neil and Daniel Roebuck are the cops.

I loved it.

Salazar!

Yeah it’s all very confusing. There’s like 13 official Princesses (Raya being the latest). Elsa & Anna aren’t official but they show up with the rest of them all the time anyway. Plus you have a whole assortment of other unofficial princesses like Sofia the First, Elena of Avalor, Vanellope Von Schweetz, Giselle from Enchanted as well as the animated version of Idina Menzel’s character from the same movie (making her the voice of…well, zero Disney Princesses technically).

And do we count Princess Leia now?

You’ve reminded me of My Bodyguard (Ruth Gordon is in both). (Not The Bodyguard with Whitney Houston.) A very early film for Adam Baldwin (Firefly), Matt Dillon (first role), and Joan Cusack. A very delightful and touching movie. A puny kid who’s tormented by a high school bully hires a bigger, scarier kid to be his bodyguard. John Houseman and Martin Mull are also in it.

I just love this movie.

I had my then-ten-year-old son see this about a year ago, and he enjoyed it. Starred Chris Makepeace as the rather nerdy tweener (he was also in the not-great, but iconic-record-of-summer-camp-circa-1979, Meatballs).

Also a young Adam Baldwin (not a brother). I remember him mainly from Chuck, but he’s had many TV and movie roles.

Someone has probably mentioned Night Shift (1982) by Ron Howard. That’s a fun one.

I’m not sure if this is a little-known movie, but I think that Richard III, starring Ian McKellen is another good movie that deserves recognition. I recently watched it on DVD. The movie is set in 1930’s Britain.
