Okay, but what is it I haven’t got a clue about? PLEASE explain to me the brilliance of Buffy. I honestly don’t believe that I’ve totally missed the point of it, but I’m willing to be persuaded otherwise. And I’ve seen a lot of it, since my wife is an avid fan.
Oh, and I hate people who pretend to like jazz also. Nobody really likes jazz.
Anyone person who repetitively asks the question, “Who’s they?”. These people are just fucking stoooopid. Me: Looks like they’re going to raise taxes again this year.
People who have no curiosity about me. Have you ever met a new co-worker, or friend of a friend, and, to get to know them, you ask questions. They seem friendly enough, but only talk about THEMSELVES. That’s fine, it’s ok…for awhile. But then their lack of curiosity about you becomes very apparent. Maybe it takes minutes, or hours, or even days and weeks, before you realize, “Hey, wait a minute, this guy/gal hasn’t asked me a SINGLE question about me and my life.”
Hate that crap. Also, a friend of my refuses to watch any science fiction movie. I tell her again and again that The Matrix is a cool movie, but because it’s SF, she won’t watch it.
After some flirting by coy looks and waved eyelashes, I had the following conversation with a girl in a doctor’s office last Friday:
I: What show is that? (On the doctor’s office TV)
She: Fresh Prince of Bel Air. You mean you’ve never seen it?
I: Nope.
She: Well, you should watch it instead of reading that :: points to my open copy of Ray Bradbury’s October Country::
Unimportant things that make me think ‘this person is not like me’?
People who don’t love black and white classics, like ‘Key Largo’ and ‘The Third Man.’
People who don’t understand what’s wrong with ‘colorized’ black and white classics.
People who don’t like bluegrass.
People who didn’t like ‘Dr. Who.’
People who wear nylon where silk is appropriate.
People who care what a neighbor’s yard looks like (within limits, of course)
People who can’t find a ‘decent’ house in their price-range.
People who read hard-cover romance or (many) sci-fi novels.
People who own SUVs (pick-ups and mini-vans are o.k.).
People who have never driven standards.
People who do not garden (well, people with yards, and no children, and no pets, and no allergies or back problems or hour-long commutes or neighbors they are determined to annoy … but you really need a reason).
People who talk about their sound systems.
Women who wear high-heels at work (unless they are strippers).
People with clean cars.
Or expensive cars.
People who make snide remarks about ‘elist’ or ‘pretentious’ people.
I was going to post a few half-hearted things, but having read Munch’s excellent post I’ve decided to stick with what was said there. I’ve fallen into that trap too often in the past.
I can’t write people off for what pop culture they’ve absorbed and enjoyed. I just don’t care.
I met someone who didn’t like cheese, not a vegan either, that’s different. But someone who didn’t like to eat cheese. I thought that was strange but certianly not enough to actually dislike that person. I don’t care much for chocolate myself and once told a girl who was having her chocolate fix for the day that I would trade all of the chocolate in the world for one bottle of beer. She lost respect for me.
But I don’t hate chocolate either. I just don’t ever feel like eating it.
I would say that Christian Fundamentalism is something I could easily write off, but I was in love with a woman who was a Christian Fundamentalist. Then she found out that I’m pro-choice so that was the end of that. SIGH
I guess rapists, murderers, and child molesters I have very little regard for despite what pop culture they are into.
Really, if someone gives me a lift unexpectedly, and there is NOTHING (no papers, maps, books to go back to the library, ice-scraper, hell even dust) in that car, I realize they are not like me. They obviously have a very different value system. Really.
On the other hand, if they KNEW they would be giving me a ride and the front seating area is not clean, or there are any empty food wrappers even in the back seat, I realize they are not like me.
I have a couple music-related things. People that use the following phrases:
“I hate classical music.”
“… real music, like rap.” (I’ve heard this one, preceded by “Why don’t you listen to…”)
“I hate people who pretend to like jazz also. Nobody really likes jazz.” (Never thought I’d actually hear that)
These all generally play into the idea of “if it’s old, it’s no good.” Other than that, though, there’s not much else that really bothers me.
Well, I don’t know much about Buffy, other than I loved the movie title when it first came out. I mean…Buffy… the VAMPIRE slayer??? Just a funny, incongruous title.
The movie was okay. Not great, kinda cute, but just okay. The TV series? I’ve tried to watch, I really have. But haven’t been able to watch more than 5 minutes, and I like cheesy vampire shows, I liked “Forever Knight” after all. (that dark haired vampire whose name I can’t remember was so good looking).
At any rate, I don’t think it’s so much that you don’t like Buffy that means you don’t have a clue, but the fact that you’re condemning people for liking it without knowing YOURSELF what it’s about.
Same with the “can’t stand people who pretend to read, but then read dross” statement (by the way, dross is the scum caused by impurities that rises to the top of molten metal, strange choice of words),anyway.
Then you go on to say you hate snobs, when the previous 2 or 3 sentences in your post were…(sorry) a bit snobbish.
After all, dross? What’s garbage to one person might be fun to the next. Me for instance, I read a lot of technical stuff while at work, so, honestly? I do tend to relax and entertain myself when reading with the lighter side of literature.
Grisham, Koontz, King, Patterson and the like, pure fluff I’m sure to the “true literary expert”.
I do throw in a classic at least once a year, and I like psychology textbooks and self help type stuff, and I struggle to study for a better grasp of math at least once or twice a year also.
Jeez, I was only responding in a light-hearted way to a light-hearted thread! I mean, I’m assuming that nobody here REALLY hates or dismisses people because of their pop culture likes or dislikes (I wasn’t really serious about jazz, either-just mucking around.)
I was aware I was being snobbish (which is kind of the point of the thread!)- that’s why I included the “snobs” comment.
