Name some Green Foods

Man, this thread brings back many unpleasant memories for me. My mom is of Irish descent and really bought into Irish culture during my adolescence. Curiously, she never did this at any other time other than St. Patrick’s Day. Okay, at 5:00am on March 17th, she’d put an album by the Clancy Brothers on the turntable and turn the volume on full blast. That would not only wake you, but dump you on the floor beside your bed. We’d have to find something green to wear to school and get to breakfast. Mom would either put green dye in the scrambled eggs, pancakes or oatmeal; thereby turning the food an upappetizing shade of gray-green. Then she’d send us off to school. It was nice getting a hearty breakfast (usually just cold cereal) but Mom did this to the nth degree. I’m so happy that I can make my own traditions now.

Why don’t you make Irish Potatoes and put green food coloring in them, they rock and they’re easy to make too. Just go on a recipe site.

Or a nice green salad with cucumbers, green peppers, and tomatillos.

Well, if you care more about color than you do about the type of cuisine, why not go for some palak paneer? It’s delicious, and it’s very green.

And, now that I think of it, sushi could easily be at least mostly green (the nori is already green, and all you’d need to do is add a tiny bit of dye to the rice to make it greenish. The wasabi is green, as are any avocados you use.)

Dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves) have green outsides, too, with a filling that’s mostly rice, which would be easy to make green (or greenish.)

Tabouli–go heavy on the parsley (which is how the stuff is best, anyway)

Marinated broccoli salads would work well.

There’s nothing wrong with the Clancy Brothers! Although at 5AM, I’d be a little pissed. And the gray-green eggs don’t sound too nice.

I’d prefer to keep the green dye thing to a minimum. Natural green is always better. I’ve seen that ghostly green-gray, and it looks like something whose expiration date has long past.

Incidently, I’m not Irish and the whole Irish superiority thing on St. Pat’s day is pretty annoying. But this is food-related, so I’m declaring myself an E.W.B. (Eater Without Borders). Food Day always makes me happy!

Got to have some champ.

But…I don’y like that!

I DO NO LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM!

Somebody had to…

Genuine Irish food that could possibly be green:

Bacon and Cabbage - get a big slab of bacon (not rashers), gammon, or a hock of ham. Soak overnight to remove any salt. Boil for about 2 hours. Remove the meat and use the water to boil up curly kale (green cabbage). Serve with champ (as above) and a teeny bit of strong mustard on the side.

Technically doesn’t fit the theme, but why not bring a bowl of Lucki Charms?

If anyone complains about them, just look at the person like they’re a complete idiot and say, “Dude. They’re magically delicious!”
