Pete Rose was a lock also.
In 1964 and 1965, the Giants had six future Hall of Famers (Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry, Orlando Cepeda, with Duke Snider in 1964 and Warren Spahn in 1965). In fact, from 1960 to 1972 they had at least four on their team. However, they only made the post-season twice: 1962 (lost World Series to the Yankess) and 1971 (won NL West but eliminated in the play-offs by the Pirates).
The mid-80s Edmonton Oilers had future hall of famers:
Glenn Anderson
Paul Coffey
Grant Fuhr
Wayne Gretzky
Jari Kurri
Mark Messier
Pretty impressive for a small-market team. And man, were they fun to watch!
Ironically, it wasn’t until after they lost all those guys(except for Edgar), that they went on to tie the MLB record for most wins in a regular season (116 in '01).
ETA: They did add one player who I think will end up being a first ballot HOFer, Ichiro.
True enough. Frank didn’t make the HOF based on his managing though.
The great Montreal Canadiens in the 1970s had Ken Dryden, Larry Robinson, Yvan Cournoyer, Jacques Lemaire, Serge Savard, Guy Lafleur, Bob Gainey, Guy Lapointe & Steve Shutt.
1977 Stanley Cup Champs Montreal Canadiens featured the following Hall of Famers:
Guy Lafleur
Jacques Lemaire
Steve Shutt
Larry Robinson
Yvan Cournoyer
Guy Lapointe
Serge Savard
Bob Gainey
Ken Dryden
eta: This is what I get for not reading the whole thread before posting…
The 1972-1973 New York Knicks had six:
Walt Frazier
Dave DeBusschere
Jerry Lucas
Willis Reed
Bill Bradley
Earl Monroe
Their coach, Red Holzman, is also in.
Phil Jackson was a player on that team and he went into the hall in 2007 for his coaching.
Interesting footnote to my previous post showing all the Hall of Famers on the Steelers of the Seventies…
The Steelers drafted FOUR future Hall of Famers in 1974: Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Jack Lambert and Mike Webster.
Has ANY team in ANY sport simultaneously brought in four rookies who were future Hall of Famers?
This hasn’t happened in the NFL draft era - this was a record.
The Steelers drafted hall of famers in 1969, 1970 (two that year), 1971 and 1972 as well - it was an amazing string of drafts for them, and a testament to the abilities of Chuck Noll and the scouting organization he built.
The NY Islanders Dynasty had the following from '84 through '86 (excluding LaFontaine, all were part of the 4 Cup winning streak from '80 to '84)
Al Arbour - Coach
Mike Bossy
Clark Gillies
Pat LaFontaine
Denis Potvin
Billy Smith
Bill Torrey - GM
Bryan Trottier
John Tonelli is a potential future HOFer as well…
