Name that anime/cartoon

Okay guys, I promised myself I wouldn’t contribute to the slew of “name that xxxx” posts lately, but this has been bugging me for the past decade and short of actually digging through old tv-listings for the local television station (and I can’t remember which one it was), I’ll be damned if I can answer it myself.

Our local television station ran a science fiction cartoon in the mid to late 80’s that had the following features, as I remember them:

  1. The base or headquarters seem to have been on Mars.
  2. There was a giant robot involved.
  3. Their leader was an old man with some sort of gem
    in his forehead who could project psychic blasts. At
    one point (or maybe several) he engaged in psychic
    duels with villains.

I’m pretty sure it was a Japanese import.

Now, it was NOT Voltron, Starblazers or Robotech (duh) or anything obvious like that.

Any ideas?

I have no idea what series that is, but here is a chronological list of theoretically all the US released anime series since 1963.

Hm. None of those seem to match. Alas, the quest continues. Perhaps it’s time to take a road trip to WMU’s library and scour their extensive collection of TV Guides.

It was probably Tranzor Z.

That’s an old one and a lot of people don’t remember that one.
