Name that song: "A raccoon coat and a red convertible"

My grandfather remembers a song that played when he was “a kid” (which means sometime before WWII) that included the line “A raccoon coat and a red convertible.” He can’t remember the tune or what type of song it was. Anyone have any ideas?

Although the lyrics here don’t mention “a red convertible”, the song could easily have been adapted by a band which covered the tune. Ask your grandfather if this jogs any memories.

In no way an answer to the OP, but from my high school years there was the Marty Robbins hit “A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation.” I wonder if Marty’s songwriter knew of the older song…

Thanks, guys. That’s not it. My dad also spent some time searching this weekend for grandpa, and no go. It may just be that it’s too old for the lyrics to be posted on the internet.

Eve knows a lot about those old-time novelty songs. I wonder where she is, or if contacting her would help. FWIW, I’m working as a virtual reference librarian now, and I’ve looked for your lyrics and come up empty so far.

Thanks, Lou! I do think he’s conflating a couple different songs, particularly since he says he can’t remember the tune, but he says he can hear that line clear as a bell.
