I am told that it is by Tom Waits, and I know that there’s a fan or two of his here.
All I remember is a bunch of “Wrong place at the wrong time” stuff. I heard it for the first and last time a few years ago, and still can’t shake it from my head!
Help meeeeeeeeeee!
It’s not by Tom Waits. Not exactly.
What you’re probably thinking of is Tom Waits’ cover of Cole Porter’s “It’s All Right With Me,” on the Hal Wilner-produced Red Hot + Blue.
This was an AIDS fund raiser featuring various artists doing their versions of Cole Porter songs, including the prophetic “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” as covered by The Thompson Twins, and my favorite tracks, the Deborah Harry-Iggy Pop duet “Well Did You Evah!,” and k.d. lang’s rendition of “So in Love.”
Didn’t Dr. John do a song similar to that . . .
“Well it musta been the wrong place,
And it coulda been the wrong time …
It could been the right {something something}
But it mighta been the wrong {yadda yadda} …”
Alot of help, ain’t I?
lissener, I believe you may well be right. I think I recall someone saying it was a cover.
And Jack Batty, Thanks, ran into that one about 1 million times trying to find the other!
