name the baby and win a prize

Ya know what - I’ve got a 15 y/o and sometimes I’m not ready for this parenthood thing either… I often wonder if anyone is. May I suggest that you not fret coping and just enjoy it?? You’ll be busy and nervous and confused and excited and bewildered and awed and overwhelmed… And one day you’ll hold your child and feel a tiny hand grip your finger and you’ll get all mushy inside.

If I was the type to offer advice, I’d say don’t try to do everything by the book - trust your instincts. Don’t make yourself crazy - have fun! And start saving for college now!!!

Have you seen Parenthood with Steve Martin? I thought it offered a great perspective of the whole deal.

So, when do I get my autographed picture?!?

Gudbjorg. Thorhild. Or Jonina. Or perhaps Olaf, Skuli, Torvi?

All names which my parents considered for me. Oh so pleased they changed their minds.

Well, sweetie honey love…

Tell her to hold off until February 18th. That is my birthday, and I’ll be her godmother if you name her after me.

If you do, she might even get named in the will. Well, not that I have much of anything to leave, but it would be a nice gesture.

So, you got choices.

Hmm… Correct me if I’m wrong here, but wouldn’t “Boy” be kind of a strange name? I mean, I like the eponymousity of it, but it’s also sort of demeaning. Don’t you think?

Now I feel sheepish. Sorry, Ross, what I meant to say was, Congrats to you on the upcoming birth of your firstborn child! You must be so proud!

Congrats, Ross! Don’t sweat the parenthood thing. Treat it like hooking up a stereo; “Instructions? I don’t need no steenking instructions!” I’m sure you’ll do a great job. You don’t strike me as the type who’d leave the kid face down in a wading pool next to a hair dryer while you go off for a beer.

Anywho, names. Lessee. . .hmm. . .well, how about for a girl:

Helen
Natalie
Lisa
Karen
Anne

And for a boy:

Gaeton (pronounced Guy-TAHN)
Philip
Christopher
Vincent
Peter

Of course, you could go with a nice unisex name like “Ford Prefect” if you wanted to play it safe.

Again, congratulations. Let us know what your wife picks out. I say “your wife” since once you float a couple of the names those of us on the board have suggested she’ll take naming authority away from you.

Yer pal,

Zappo

Congratulations!!
In honour of this monumentous occasion, I will share with you… The List!

I don’t plan on having children for at least another two years, and The List is revised almost weekly, so chances are the future little Cazzles don’t even have their names listed yet. Still, it’s a big thing for me to share The List, and I hope you comprehend the extent of this gesture.

Girls:
Amy, Alana, Alorra, Arial/Ariana, Ayana, Callasandra, Cassandra, Cassidy, Catherine, Charlotte, Dacey, Erin, Gabrielle, Iliana, Gemma/Jemma, Jayde, Jenna, Jocelyn, Kayleigh, Kiana, Kiara, Kira/Kyra, Lauren, Madigan, Megan,
Raine, Renee, Rose, Sidney, Taryn

Boys:
Aidan, Alexander, Angus, Anthony, Cameron, Darian, Dorian, Douglas, Eric, Ethan, Evander, Gabriel, Gavan, Hamish, Hayden, James, Jarred/Jared/Jarrod, Jasper, Jeremy, Kane, Lachlan, Mitchell, Nathanial/Nathan, Riley, Thomas, Tobias, William

I haven’t actually looked at The List in a couple of weeks, and so I find myself wondering what possessed me to add some of those names already. The theory is that eventually The List will contain only the brightest and best names.

Precious for a girl.

Buster for a boy.

Congrats!! Think of this: that child is going to think you hung the moon, at least for the first 9 years or so. In his or her eyes you will be more wonderful than Mr. Rodgers, a better athlete than Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan, braver than a Rough Rider, stronger than Hercules… Fatherhood is great that way.

As for names:

For boys I like Garrett, Cole, Bram, Birk (or maybe that’s spelled Burke? I just heard it, and liked it when I figured it was spelled Birk)…

For Girls: I’m way traditional. Caroline, Mary, Charlotte, Grace, Marilyn, that sort of thing. Haven’t thought much about this because I knew I was having a boy pretty early into it. My friend named her daughter Jane, something I really liked because everyone knows how to spell it yet it’s not been trendy for a while. I think that’s why Marilyn makes my list, too.

My mom said my dad was a little upset that I wasn’t born until the day after his birthday, but when he realized we were both Easter Sunday babies, he was less disapointed.

Now, I’m not sure that I’ll ever chose to reproduce, but to show my name picking experience, I name characters frequently, so I own a baby name book for inspiration. Then again, I named my friend’s female manx kitten for her- Bob. I’m going to name my next dog Chase, too

As for real live humans…

My current favorite girl’s name (incidentally what I named the protagonist of my WIP) is Paige. Of course, were I to name a child that it’d be a twisted little joke Paige=page =) I also like Katelyn, in all it’s various spellings.

For boys: Adin, Caleb, Julian(not Adin’s twin!) and Hunter.

Please, please don’t name your son Angel (male #61 2000) or your daughter Destiny (female #39 2000)

Hey, it was good enough for Tarzan’s son!

Beautiful though they may be, I’d shy away from any name where you have to supply the pronunciation in addition to the spelling. This comes from personal experience. :frowning:

I wanted to name my siblings Emily Alison and Nathan Alexander (for Alex P. Keaton, of course!). They wound up being Alison and Alex. Along with my “Al-” first name, we made some wonderful tongue twisters for our parents. You would have thought my mother would have learned from experience…she and her four sibs all had “J” names, and her grandfather, who couldn’t distinguish between Jenci and Jana, dubbed both my mom and my aunt “Janci.”

Eventually, my sister became Al, my brother became Xan, and I became Julie. Which confused the dog, because that was her name.

Here’s my ideas for my future offspring, see if they work for you:
Irene (after my 98-year old great grandmother)
Jason (and the Argonauts)
Westley (the man in black)

Congrats on the upcoming baby! I, myself, am a February 17 girl. So is my young cousin, Jerry O’Connell, and Michael Jordan. It’s a good day to be born! We would welcome another!

Our son is named “Nigel.” We practically never meet another one in the US, though it is common in the UK and the Caribbean. People always admire the name, though. Daughter is Olivia, though I also thought about “Hadley” - which was Ernest Hemingway’s first wife’s name.

Good Boy names:
Seth
Salem
Ryan
Justus

Girls:
