You don’t need to be left, right or ambidextrous for Trump to threaten your comfy political class benefits.

I’d say that the heinous act would be that of not rubber stamping for congress.
Then they can impeach and get out their backup stamper in Pence.
Trump getting caught (publicly) using his powers as boss of the IRS to monkey around with his own tax issues might be that very toxic issue alluded to above.
I figure a more likely scenario for impeachment would be Trump turning out not to be a lapdog for the GOP and publicly opposing some of their pet proposals. If the public isn’t strongly supporting Trump, they may figure they can risk impeachment to get a “real” Republican. If, e.g., the House develops the same relationship with Trump that they had with Obama (and he is such a wild-card that I would regard that as unlikely but not impossible), his days in the Oval Office may be even fewer than he planned.
Not only will he not be impeached he will win again in 2020 - contingent upon him both wanting to run again and still being alive.
You think he couldn’t win it dead?
Fair point
Well, in a sense they already do. Nixon jumped before he could be pushed, but there’s hardly much debate over the fact that impeachment proceedings were what forced him to quit.

One possible exception: The US experiences a cataclysmic event that Trump should have prepared the country, and fucks up the response on a monumental scale. The only one that comes to mind is war. I still don’t know if war with be a major regional war (terrorism) or worse (China and maybe Russia), the latter impeachment proceedings delayed because of the utter destruction of the country.

Nope. None of this would do it. Presidents have have catastrophes happen on their watch before, many of which they were rightly blamed for. None were impeached.
If the USA got into a really disastrously bad war (without it going nuclear and making all this irrelevant) in 2018, Trump would claim he won the war, and Trumpists would believe him. The GOP would spin it as either a win or, if that was not possible, that it was the fault of:
Republicans would believe this. You’re all dealing with facts. Facts don’t matter much anymore.
The only thing that gets Trump impeached is IF he is absolutely, totally, unquestionably, no-doubt-about-it caught committing an extremely serious crime, AND that crime is not one against women or minorities - so, for instance, actual rape and murder of a woman isn’t enough, but treason might be - AND there is something about the incident that emotionally hits Trump supporters. Forget facts; it has to affect feelings in a way that makes it politically advantageous to be seen as a Congressperson who votes to impeach. Then they will - maybe - impeach. Not before.
Hard to say. We could be reaching a tipping point where Republicans might decide impeaching Trump (or getting him to resign with a threat of impeachment) will be less of a problem for the party than having Trump as President will be.
He might have a better chance dead. Can’t tweet up a shitstorm from the grave!
Won’t happen unless the Democrats take the house in 2018, which is unlikely.

Pence isn’t very good unimpeachment insurance. He fits the GOP mold much better them Trump does. If Trump gives them a good reason they’ll do it. As you are saying they’ll have to do a cost/benefit analysis and Trump could easily cost them a lot with little benefit resulting. The party establishment never wanted him in the first place, I think they still don’t. Trump walks a tightrope right now, if he is perceived as doing a good job as president then he remains safe without absolute evidence of the worst crimes, but given a down turn in the economy or other major screw-up he becomes instantly vulnerable.
At a guess; within a year, after he does something they can use as an excuse. Probably nuking some place like Mecca or Mexico City. The Republican leadership doesn’t like him at all, and if they get rid of him they can replace him with Pence.
Pretty sure about that, are you? It’s Trump we’re talking about.
Ain’t gonna happen. But if it did, the charge would be “High Crimes and Misdemeanors”.

We’re going to give you a pass on that since you’re not an American.
Hint: Per the constitution, that’s the only place it can come from.
He’s not getting impeached.
After 2016, I will never try to predict any political event or outcome again, ever. Clearly I don’t understand politics, Americans, news media, statistics, Christianity, the working class, immigrants, the middle class, women, the upper class, men, history, physics, geography, biology, or much of anything else.
I have no clue what the next four (or, god forbid, eight) years will be like. I just remember what Kurt Vonnegut once wrote: “Anything that can be done, will be done. So hunker down.”
