I get chills just from reading your lists. I haven’t heard most of those songs in years, but I still remember all the lyrics. My most-listened-to band ever.
I can’t think of 5, but I liked “I Can’t Dance” a lot.
That’s a very disturbing song.
I’ve been a Genesis fan all my life. As mentioned in this thread, this is hard to do, not only because of the size of the collection, but also because of the “stages” they went through (with Gabriel, after Gabriel but with Hackett, post-Hackett).
Anyway (they say she comes on a pale horse), here are my top 5:
HM: Fountain of Salmacis, The Knife, In The Cage, Carpet Crawlers, Squonk, Dance on a Volcano, Domino 1 & 2, Supper’s Ready
Off the top of my head:
Cinema Show
Blood on the Rooftops
Can-Utility and the Coastliners
Carpet Crawlers
Turn It On Again
There really are many to choose from, and tomorrow my list may be different.
Man of Our Time
Dancing With the Moonlit Knight
Duke intro/outro
I Know What I Like (in Your Wardrobe)
The Return of the Giant Hogweed
ETA - jesus fuck I hate “That’s All” - what a pedestrian, by-the-numbers, flaccid, hacked-out piece of toxic flotsam.
“Invisible Touch” also doesn’t do a whole lot for me.
I don’t know a lot of Genesis, and maybe I like Collins’s solo stuff more; but I can name a few:
And really, I could have put three different things from 3-5. A bunch of Peter Gabriel’s solo stuff and Phil Collins’s solo stuff would be higher than most of them.
I like them, but I see what you mean.
I think “That’s All” and “Throwing It All Away” do that kind of pop very well. “Invisible Touch”–well, I liked it well enough when I was fourteen.
Actually, if it were, “songs by people connected to Genesis,” my list would be something like:
I am such a 1980’s child.
sure I’ll go with that.
also “Back In NYC” - whole lotta time signature fun in that puppy, especially in about the last minute.
I’m sure I’d pick a different 5 tomorrow
Supper’s Ready
Entangled
Firth of Fifth (for the guitar solo)
Snowbound (not much love for this?)
Mama
