Name your Top 5 Genesis Songs

…so if someone really likes Selling England by the Pound, which other album would they like?

Although Sqounk and Turn It On Again are great songs – from Duke?

Squonk is from A Trick of the Tail. Turn it on Again is from Duke.

Selling England fans would like Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering which both feature Collins on vocals. They’d also like the Seconds Out live recording.

Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme are the most similar Gabriel records.

Tough to narrow it down to five. Hmm. I guess for now I’d say:

Mama
Home by the Sea
Abacab
Silver Rainbow
Just a Job To Do

Honorable mentions:

Turn It On Again
Man on the Corner
Follow You Follow Me

The LPs that brackett “Selling” are Foxtrot and Lamb Lies Down. Phil is only featured on one Selling song, you must know. My guess is you would like anything with Steve Hackett on it, all the way from Nursery Cryme to Wind and Wuthering. The good stuff is all in there. Sorry pop fans.

The Lamb is pretty light on Steve’s influence, however. But The Lamb is pretty close in style to Duke, which is also worthwhile.

I hadn’t heard Blood on the Rooftops until this thread – now that I have, I agree I’d have to squeeze it into my top 5 somehow.

  1. Squonk
  2. Firth of Fifth
  3. I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)
  4. In the Cage + Medley (particularly from the Mama Tour DVD)
  5. Cinema Show

I only first heard it 5 or 6 years ago but my favorite iteration of the In the Cage medley is one I believe it was recorded at a concert at Madison Square Garden in 1986 (at least my You Tube link below was). Goes like this:

*In the Cage / In That Quiet Earth / Apocalypse in 9/8 / As Sure as Eggs Is Eggs *(the closing part of Supper’s Ready

It’s kinda one big Banks (the Prog Prodigy) fest. You can hear it here.

Do It Now!!!

I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)
I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)
I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)
I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)
Follow You Follow Me

As a casual fan:

Mama
Tonight, Tonight
Land of Confusion
Abacab

Ok that’s only 4. But they’re good songs.

Dance on a Volcano
Home By the Sea
Mama (Heh heh hehhhh)
Carpet Crawlers
Land of Confusion

I’d never heard that version before. Thank you for that. Listened to it at work on my little bookshelf speakers. I’m going to have to give it another listen when I get home.

Darn it. I forgot Dance on a Volcano, but I’ve got no room in the top 5. It will just have to be an honorable mention.
