Similarly, I’ve heard of a college bar somewhere or other called “The Library”, for the same reason.
The most creative name around here is probably “The Molly Brown”. Though I gather it’s not named directly after the Titanic survivor, but after a riverboat named after the Titanic survivor.
I know that neighbourhood well, Lissla; I used to spend a lot of time down there. Of the pubs you list, I’ve been to The Feathers and Lion, but never to Scratch Daniel’s. Oh well, two out of three ain’t bad.
Well, we’ve had the Library, The English Department (started by an English Professor who was denied tenure) and the Study Hall. None have fared all that well (the Study Hall in Isla Vista has the only hard liquor license and is actually hanging in there).
My friend’s brother is a bartender at the Frog and Peach in San Luis Obispo. I always thought that it was a weird name for a pub, but I recently found out that it’s the name of a pub in a Dudley Moore and Peter Cook sketch.
Wow, you managed to not list any of the bars on my San Francisco Pub Crawl:
Gold Dust Lounge
Buddha
Lipo
Red’s Lounge
The Saloon
I have been to some of the other places on your list, though. Strangely enough, I can only say 11 for sure. I’ve been over 21 for 28 years now so I’m sort of curious about my life list. I’m pretty sure I’ve been to over more than 270 bars (I probably did this in one year when I was traveling around the world).
By the way, nobosdy’s mentioned this yet, but it seems as if every city has or had something called Casablanca, Rick’s, Greenstreet’s or the like, apparently hoping to cash in on the mystique of the movie casablanca.
Some places I like in Nashville: Blackstone’s Brewery
The Flying Saucer
The Beer Cellar, literally a basement bar with about a hundred beers on tap) Windows on the Cumberland, which isn’t much of a pub at all but an excellent, tiny hole-in-the-wall in which to see local bands up close and personal.
In Knoxville I like: Preservation Pub
Barley’s Taproom
and Cup a Joe’s, the only coffeeshop I ever knew that had a full bar and wicked late-night beer specials. You go there to drink and wind down after a long night of drinkin’.
Yeah, there’s a place in Salem MA called O’Neill’s. I’ve been there a couple times. It’s OK. They serve a pretty decent Guinness Stew (but no beef and kidney pie).
Then there’s Kitty O’Shay’s in Beverly (and Boston) MA. An “Irish” Pub that derives it’s authenticity from hiring actual Irish (sounding) people to sling drinks.
My local is Sweeney’s Retreat. They’ve got the Sox on TV, Lobstah Rolls, and great burgers. Be a good place for a Boston Dopefest, AAMOF. Well, good for me, at least.
When I was in school, there was a bar, located in an out of the way basement, called Underwhere. It was under the local pharmacy. Directions to it were always “Under People’s Drug”.
The local cookie baker was Doughbiz (because they sold single servings of cookie dough, as well as the baked product)
