I’ll kick off with:
The Fiddler’s Elbow.
Not that great, so I was hoping some of us could improve upon it.
What about names you’d like to see as well…

“He’s Not Here”, Chapel Hill, NC.
I used to frequent an establishment called “The Pub at the End of the Universe”.
“Wee Blew Inn” in Venice, FL.
I thought the Slug and Lettuce in London was rather amusing.
And they make the BEST mushroom burger ever - it’s a MUSHROOM! A big fat fried Portobello mushroom! It was very yummy. <sigh> I miss London - I think my mom and I are going to go back next year.
There was a cool place in Paris off the Rue st. Germain called Le Formidiable.
I liked the name and the cool bartender took pity on my poor carrying all my bags around due to Desert Storm security measures ass and plied me with espresso to keep me awake for the 14 hour layover I had
My favourite pub is called The Spotted Dick.
Now, being worldly and all, I know that’s the name of an English pudding (and quite good too). However, I always snicker when I see tourists take a picture of its sign.
The Tune Inn is the best name I can think of right now. It used to be the big punk/hardcore bar in the area. Its still open, but has a more mellow crowd now.
My favorite here in Panama is El Túnel de Tiempo (The Time Tunnel). I always wonder whether it’s supposed to make you travel backwards or forwards in time.
Before for the U.S. bases closed, The Foxhole was a well-known pick-up bar catering to the GIs. I’m sure the double entendre was intentional.
In my neighborhood in the Bronx, the Dew Drop Inn was even worse than the pun in its name.
** Group Therapy **
in Columbia, South Carolina.
The Office
I’ve seen two bars named this, one of them in Maine. Pretty cool idea. “Bye, Honey. I’m going to The Office” “No, really Hon, I swear. I was out at The Office all night” etc.
There’s a fairly average pub in Ashtead, Surrey (UK) called The Leg of Mutton and Cauliflower. My favourites, though, are two very cool pub/bars in London – the oddly-named Positively Fourth Street near Warren Street tube, and the outstanding Monkey Chews at Chalk Farm.
There’s a Cannibal Bar here. Best not to examine the happy hour nibbles too closely, I guess.
I stayed at this pub/B&B when vacationing in Wales: The Black Bouy Inn. Or the Black Boy Inn. It had two signs, one with a bouy, and one with a black sailor.
we have a Hung Far Low here in Portland, OR.
really.
Here in Toronto (as is Globe-trotter’s hang-out), we have:
Fred’s Not Here (upstairs)/The Red Tomato (downstairs)
Bovine Sex Club (or did this close?)
Ted’s Wrecking Yard
Savage Garden
Lava Lounge
Toad in the Hole
I’m sure I can think of a zillion more with a little time.
Monkey Chews? I live in Chalk Farm. Is it still around, and where is/was it? Surely ‘Monkey Cheese’ would be more humerous and memorable. But then, who frequent it?
Our local is called The Enterprise. Pretty cool until Star Trek starting producing an overly sentimental version called the same thing. Ther’s a pub up the road in Camden Town called The Purple Turtle as well. Haven’t been in there yet, but The Enterprise rules!
I’ve seen bars in college towns named The Library. Same thing as The Office.
The Pickled Trout, **Dew Drop Inn **, and Jocko’s Rocketship
are 3 (somewhat) local watering holes around here.
The Last Drop in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh. Just next to where the public hangings took place (I think the name goes back at least 200 years.)
