Bizarre Bar Names

We have an English pub called The Pickled Liver. There’s also two bars in the Patpong red-light district called Pussy Collection and Super Pussy.

There used to be two bars side by side called Pussy Galore and Pussy Alive. One particular night years ago, Pussy Galore was really jumping, while Pussy Alive had no customers and just a handful of bored-looking girls. When the door tout tried to get us to go into Pussy Alive, my friend quipped, “Sorry, but the pussy looks more galore over there than it does alive in here.”

Any others?

There used to be a place in Berwyn, IL (I think, it was right on Harlem) called “He’s Not Here”

I assume because that’s how the phone got answered, and there was the joke.

My favorite bar, when I lived in Thailand, was the Monica Bar, which was just a few steps from the White House (which was a bar/strip club). Of course Bill was still in power back then. I think this whole area was torn down to make way for a car park.

We also have a bar called The Office, presumably so guys can tell their sweeties over the phone, “Sorry, Honey, but I’m stuck at The Office.”

Yes, I remember Monica and White House. They were both in an area called Clinton Plaza. (Monica was the first bar as you entered Clinton Plaza.) That whole area has indeed been torn down now, and they’re building condos.

There IS still a Hillary bar not too far away, in Sukhumvit Soi 4, up from Nana Plaza. Monica, Clinton Plaza and Hillary all appeared about the same time. In fact, Hillary bar became so popular, that there’s a second branch of it in the same street.

There’s a pub in Toronto called The Library.

“Yes, Mom, I’m doing my schioolwork. I’m just about to go to The Library.”

The Dog’s Bollix.

When I went to Dublin, my friends and I were walking along the river Liffey. We saw a building that said “Inn on the Liffey” and walked further to see another building, obviously a bar, called “Out on the Liffey”.

There’s a dive bar in Aurora IL called “Alibi” that I always thought fitting. Right down the road from the trailer park too.

Oh, and there used to be a place in the Ukrainian Village called “Tuman’s Alcohol Abuse Center”. That was the greatest bar ever.

Not a real bar (as far as I know), but I always wanted to open a place on a side street in Washington, D.C. and call it “The Hidden Agenda”.

There IS a real bar in DC called “The Hawk ‘n’ Dove”.

There’s also a Library Bar in Columbus, near Ohio State University’s campus.

Also in the realm of “deceptively named college-town establishments” is Harry’s Chocolate Shop, which began as a soda fountain but is now many an alcohol-loving Purdue student’s “home away from dorm”.

My local pub used to be a place called The Pig’s Ear.

Cockney rhyming slang, I’m told.

There’s a Library Lounge (strip club/bar) in Tampa near USF. Never actually been in that one, not in a really nice area.

My favorite in Gainesville was on the UF campus and called “The Orange and Brew”, which was a play on Florida’s school colors.

I don’t recall where, but I have seen a bar called “Straight Home”. And, I used to always drive past a bar called “The Stumble Inn”.

I spent many nights I’ll never remember in “The Flying Pig”, which was cool not so much for its name as for the concrete pigs out front who had their ears folded over their eyes in terror.

How about the “Bung Hole” pub in London? (57 High Holborn, Camden, London)

Funny London Pub Name

There a “Library” bar in La Crosse WI, which is a college town.

Here in Appleton, there’s a bar called “The Bar”. Clever, huh?

And there used to be one in Oshkosh, just across from the UWO campus. Good times.

<hijack>Hey brewha, got any idea what happened to the Fire Alarm out on East Wisconsin? We drove past the other day and were surprised to see it closed. Then again, haven’t lived in Appletown for years, nor driven down that way.</hijack>

There was a bar near the University of Alberta in Edmonton called “The Library.” Sadly, it was sold. The new owners continued to operate it as a bar, but with a name that wasn’t nearly as interesting.

I recall the Toronto neighbourhood known as “the Beach,” and a pub there called “Lion on the Beach.” Is it still there, Toronto Dopers? I always found that to be a clever little pun. And it was a nice pub too.

Durty Nelly’s Pub in Charlottesville VA.

Sorry, I’ve never heard of it. But, I’ve only lived here about 1 1/2 years.
