In what universe does “trig” imply “smart and trim”? You can learn trigonometry in friggin’ middle school, and it stops being its own topic really quickly. You can use trigonometry in more advanced mathematics, but that’s true of addition, too.

The word “trig” is generally not used that way in American English. I’ve only ever seen it in British novels. So I wouldn’t expect Ms. Palin to know that meaning of the word.
