First sentence! “It was 11:35 at night, and Peter couldn’t fall asleep.”
This was such a stupid/awesome idea.

Go for “awsomely stupid” and wait for the art to actually happen around Thanksgiving. Either way, I’m glad you’re in. You rock!
Everybody in this thread rocks! Succeed or not, we’re all doing something super cool, so thanks for posting and joining!! (Even if you were going to join anyway, it’s still cool. )
Oh my.
Pirates too.
Good thing I didn’t start last night - the pirates might have got squeezed out.
I’m about to settle down to a bit of awesome stupidity now (the guilt monkeys started early, and are already on at me because I didn’t take advantage of my superior time zone…)
Or Nazi’s and UFO’s. 1000 words of my ‘let’s pretend a whole lot of crap is true and make out like a bandit/Dan Brown’ UFO/Nazi/Catholic Church conspiracy thriller is in the bag.
Here are my opening lines:
The room was far too warm in the Washington summer. But the tall windows had been closed to prevent eavesdroppers; inside it was stifling. Charles Lindbergh stood near a window, his white linen suit rumpled by the humidity, holding a digital watch, watching as the seconds rushed by.
“No noise at all.” He reported as he held the artifact to his ear.
“No moving parts,” General Marshall replied, “we took it apart and couldn’t make heads nor tails of it.” His soft voice carried authority. “It was made in Japan, by the way.”
Not my opening section, but the one I’m using for the exerpt on the NaNo site:
I’m scared to start…the power has been off twice already this morning and I’d hate to lose what I’ve typed already. I’ll get to it this afternoon, sometime.
I’m not sure if it helps or hinders me in that my word processor doesn’t have a word counter…
I was a good girl and didn’t stay up past midnight to start writing. Hell, I only stayed up till 11 or so, laying out my plot notecards and tweaking here and there, and I’m still exhausted. Dunkin’ Donuts neglected to put cream in my coffee, but somebody higher up the food chain than I am snuck into the Executive Kitchen and scored me some cream.
Then I got all ready to work, and discovered our terminal system is down. Guess what that means? That’s right … I can’t work. Whatever will I do with myself?
I’ve done nothing. Still haven’t figured out my characters. No plot, no notecards, nothing.
Can’t wait to start tonight…
1664 words this morning, after waking from a nightmare. Everything this year is outlined for the story, although I’ll admit part of the outline entries are just chapter titles that I thought sounded cool, and have no idea what will actually go into them yet.
Where can I post a few lines. Give me a link, no time for browsing, I got a book to write!
http://www.nanowrimo.org/modules/wordcount/ Same place you go to update your wordcount.
My first paragraph, which I rather like:
Granted, there are at least two tremendous run-on sentence in there, but… that’s what EdMo is for.
Okay, I’m out of the blocks with 1980 words. Fear my mad hack-writer skills! Nothing to say about it yet except (a) it owes its inspiration to a Dope discussion and (b) I think I can probably find another twenty words today. Registered under the same name over at NaNo.
The system came back up, so no writing for me. I can knock out a couple thousand words before Lost tonight, but I’ll probably have some time this afternoon.
Yay for EdMo! And look!ninjas, I adore the name Coin-Operated Boy.
Fine, my day’s work is posted. Here.
look!ninjas, suddenly the song “Coin Operated Boy” by The Dresden Dolls makes a lot more sense.
I still have 600 words to write for the day before I upload, but I’ve posted my exerpt here. (is the flash version working for anyone?)
Just fine, last time I checked.
I hit 1800, which is way better than I managed last year. Just hope I can keep this pace up.
I’m currently unemployed so I figured maybe I could try it.
So I started writing. After an hour I have 329 words. 50,000 words / 29 days (probably not going to write on Thanksgiving) = 1700 and change per day. At my current rate that is approx 5 hours a day. Which is a stretch even I stay unemployed.
Unless I get majpr inspiration I think I will pass.
But best of luck to all participants!
Brian
