NaNoWriMo is coming

I’m in again. I’ve done this <mumble> years, and always ‘won’ in the sense of cranking out 50k words but I have NEVER managed to get to really complete a book during the month. :frowning:

(Well, it doesn’t help at all that when I finally finished the novels they came out to be from 90,000 to 240,000 words.)

So this year I have deliberately designed a short plot and a limited cast of characters and I SWEAR I will end the month with a complete rough draft, all the way from Chapter 1 to “THE END.”

And with no skipped over intermediate sub-plot chapters, either.

(waves hand around) Me! Me! MEMEMEMEMEME@! And what about YOU???

(sorry… just got kind of caught up in all the excitement.)

Seriously, though, there MUST be a lot of other people here who are participating in NaNoWriMo. But if there’s a thread, I can’t find it. Let your voice be heard!

other thread.
And; MEMEMEMEME too!

Here’s why I got confused! This thread was predicated on the theme of NaNo not having yet arrived. (But I can get confused very easily anyway…

Our Portland kickoff party was yesterday! Yay! LOTS of people. There had to be at least 100. For some reason, most seemed to be working on various scifi ideas. I can’t say if it’s the NW thing, or if that’s been happening a lot in NaNo anyway. I can honestly say, though, that nobody else is doing a romance erotica paranormal mystery. (Whether this is a good thing or not, I don’t know… but there it is.)

I just got back from the Hamilton kick-off party, which as co-ML, I helped organize and MC. Lots of fun, really excited now!

I’ve wanted to do this for a while, but never have tried. I may give it a go this year. My schedule is packed, but I do have the whole week off for Thanksgiving, so I can get a lot done then. I may need to get a keyboard for my iPad.

Merged duplicate threads.

Giving it a shot. I didn’t even know there was such a thing until I read this thread. First step will be to figure out what to write about, as I wasn’t planning to write a novel just now.

Sigh. The yearly decision between lack of productivity and guilt.

What the hell. I’m in.

Does anybody here prep?

I never do, unless you count printing out the already started stuff I’m going to work on.

Oh, and how about some resources?

If you need a name, Fake Name Generator gives lots of personal details. Behind the Name and Behind the Surname are both useful too.

Some more random generators: NPC Characteristics gives random quirks. Quickie Backstory Generator is somewhat usefully, if very D&D oriented.

I went completely insane with outlines for Death Train. But that was before I accepted that Satan is a major character. And… (looks around surreptitiously) DT is a kind of magnum opus presaged in lots of other stuff that’s been written already, sometimes years ago. I’m a cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater (takes pie out of oven. Have y’all ever tried pumpkin pie with hot brandy butter sauce?)

So far all I have is the title “Feculent Frog’s Big Day.” Sounds like a great title for a children’s book, but few of those are novel length.

I like it. Um… what exactly is a “feculent frog”? (It might be better not to ask, but now I HAVE to know…)

Sigh. I guess I’ll try. Again. Nothing more humbling… But I guess I could use it.

Oh… I looked it up. Never mind.

So “The Story of the Unbearably Cute and Snuggly Frog” just didn’t quite work, somehow?

I have a title: Patchwork Riddle. This is going to be a crazy quilt of reminiscence and general comments.

In honor of that decision, I have stayed up too late but I have finally finished my Petition to the Muse. It could probably use an edit, but it’s finished. I’ve been pondering that thing for years.

Now I need to go to petition row in the Davis Farmer’s Market and collect signatures. But first, I need to buy or borrow a camera.

I’ve got a working title - Building Bonds - but it will change if I find something better. I’ve got the beginning and the end pretty much worked out, but the middle is rather vague at this point.

Last year I didn’t do it because I went to Istanbul for a week in November. This year I was planning on doing it then we just got tickets to go to Barcelona over Thanksgiving. (These are the kinds of problems I don’t mind having.)

I’ve got two competing ideas:

The first is a bit complicated but I’ve got it mostly worked out. It’s a trilogy of simultaneous stories each with a POV of the protagonists who are the antagonists in the other two stories. Clues are left in each story that will end up explaining the true answer to the lady-or-the-tiger type ending that each story alone would have. It’s a total gimmick, but I think it would be fun to try and do.

The second would be a satire book based on an idea that just needs more research to get moving. This would also be a total gimmick, but would probably be a lot more in my wheelhouse.

I’m just going to wake up on Thursday morning and if I bring my laptop to work that day, I’ll start one of 'em.

Love. Sex. Obsession. Murder. Satan.

Death Train: The Novel.

It’s like 50 Shades of Grey for grownups, but with good grammar and a plot.

More here!

So I now have four writing projects:

The White Knight - comic book.(Just about all the characters I’m doing for the 30 Characters Challenge are for this as well). I have seven stories written and three specials (illustrated text and side stories). I want to get at least three more stories done before I start looking for an artist (I could do it, theoretically, but I draw too slow).

Very Dirty Porn Story (I actually do have a title for this, but I plan on publishing it under a pseudonym so…). No more to be said. It’s about half way done, I think (I started it last year).

Untitled scifi/fantasy thing. This will probably never turn into anything. I have no real plot for it, just a few scenes that wouldn’t get out of my head. I just want to get those scenes connected to each other.

Untitled Superhero Romance. I’m not planning on doing much with this. If anything, I might make it a web serial or something. I want to get the major bits written for it so I can set it aside and work on the first two projects. Two of the character designs are the main characters of this.
