Nascar people, help me understand

I don’t follow NASCAR, but noticed some news stories about the new point system this year being simplified, and it seemed like it would be. 43 for first, and so on…

Except, when I was just now reading that this nobody kid (cool story) wins the race, and I look at race results, it says he got zero points.

Huh?

NASCAR put out a new rule this year that drivers could only win points in one series, and drivers had to pick the series ahead of time. Since Trevor Bayne is only a part time Cup driver, he picked the Nationwide Series as the series he’ll earn points in.

The rule primary purpose was to prevent the full-time Cup guys from winning the Nationwide Series.

Gotcha. Thanks!
