Jack’s BBQ on Broadway. It’s Texas BBQ, but great, cheap & central. For a classier meal with a WONDERFUL wine list, try the Sunset Grille, up by Vandy. Check in advance because they used to do this great deal of half price meals after 10 pm.
I’m a sucker for the Stage for live music, which is basically next door (to Jack’s), but that is for personal reasons. I would barhop for an evening - making sure you stop in on Tootsie’s and Rob’s Western Room. They are all on Broadway. Printers’ Alley can be fun too - I spent many a drunken late night at Lonnies, a C&W karaoke bar.
Go out to the Loveless Cafe for breakfast if you have a car - reputed to be the best biscuits in the world, and their home cured ham is to die for. Don’t order too much, as they have free, never ending plates of biscuits and home made preserves to gorge on.
Lynchburg is a fun day trip for the Jack Daniel’s distillery.
Now I am all nostalgic for Nashville. Only have to wait to September before work pays for me to go back down again.
gerst haus out by the stadium is great. a bit pricey but ya get what ya pay for. last time i ate there ordered a sausage plate and ate it for a couple days.
I second the Gerst Haus. If you get in there on the weekend, you will be entertained by a German band along with a good meal and fishbowls of beer.
Downtown, there is Tootsie’s, Robert’s Western Room, Ernest Tubb Record Shop (with a midnight jam after the Opry), Mulligan’s Pub (house band is Sportin’ Paddy, traditional Irish drinking music), Hard Rock and Wild Horse Saloon.
12th Avenue South has good bluegrass at the Station Inn.
There is the Hermitage, Cheekwood and Traveler’s Rest for history and the Frist Center for art.
Day trips include the aforementioned Jack Daniel’s distillery, the George Dickel distillery, Heaven Hill distillery in Bardstown, KY (3 hour drive), Stone’s River Battlefield, Horse Cave (Park City, KY, 1.5 hour drive), Cedars of Lebanon State Park and Long Hunter State Park.
Can you tell that I love where I live?
If you would like more suggestions, feel free to e-mail me.
Have a great trip!
ETA: Midori’s has the best sushi in town…try their Elizabeth roll.
I second the Parthenon and Centennial Park. It’s really beautiful, and there’s a good BBQ place right next to it (by the McDonald’s). The giant statue of Athena is my favorite part of the Parthenon.
