Murdoch’s company just bought National Geographic, which is just great, considering that the National Geographic Society’s mission includes giving grants to scientists.

The Society is the organization that gives grants. I don’t think Murdoch bought that (or even what buying a non-profit scientific research institution would even exactly entail, its not like they have shares or anything). The Society spun off its media properties, which Murdoch now owns a controlling share in.
I can sort of see the logic of selling that stuff to a media company rather than try and manage it themselves. But aside from Murdoch’s anti-science bent, I think the real problem is that running the various TV shows and magazines for profit will end up turning them into the same reality show dominated mess other for-profit TV channels with a putatively educational mission have turned into.
