National Lampoon's Van Wilder (spoilers)

Am I the only person who saw, and liked, this movie?

No, and yes. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, for some odd reason at least five of the students in my Freshman Comp class choose to write papers about Van Wilder every fall*, so my guess is that they probably like it. (I haven’t seen it, myself, and after reading all those papers I don’t have the slightest desire to.)

  • The assignment, by the way, is to analyze how higher education gets represented in any movie set on a college or university campus, so it’s not like they’re lacking for choices. Come to think of it, though, I suppose it could be the only college movie they know.

Um, what spoilers?

Haven’t seen it, was hoping to get some idea of what it was about. Oh well…

For those who haven’t seen it, here’s a fairly spoiler-less synopsis.

Van Wilder is a university student and the son of a rich family. He’s been taking classes for years, but still hasn’t got a degree. Finally, his father tells him that he’s not giving him any more money to go to school. He starts to plan parties to pay for his education; hilarity ensues.

Personally, I loved it. It was far funnier than I expected. Of course, I was barely 17 when it came out, so I was right in its target audience. Still am, probably.

First half, very funny. Second half, the “serious” half, not good at all.

The most inspired part of Van Wilder was the casting of Tim Mathieson as his father.

Tara Reid’s in it.

I saw it. And liked it. Especially the part about the dog and the eclairs. Waitaminute…that part made me gag…

But the diarrhea part. That was funny.

Hah! I haven’t seen Van Wilder, but that is rather clever.

I watched it because of the cast. It was okay, but I’ve never had a non-bloody movie turn my stomach like Van Wilder did.

It was just your basic cheap-humor, gross-out college comedy. I’ve seen better, I’ve seen worse. But it did make me laugh.

The eclair scene was pretty putrid. But, again, it did make me laugh.

Oh. Well, I had this silly idea that a whole bunch of people loved it and we could talk about it and stuff. Better to have “spoilers” in the title Just In Case, I always say. Saves me having to pester mods later, y’know.

Guess not though.

Aside from the whole dog… thing (“I think I’ve had these before!”), what was so gross?

A co-worker loaned me this and I avoided watching it for a long time. I gave it a chance last night because I loved Kal Penn in “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle”. I thought it was hilarious even though I had to keep looking away during the dog scene. Loved the “I think I’ve had these before” line as well as Taj with his candles, massage oil and Barry White.
