National Liberal Raido Goes Dark

Cite for claim that Air America has no audience?

Cite for claim that Air America is propaganda, does not have paying sponsors, and has no listeners?

Cite for claim that nobody would listen under these circumstances? Cite proving beyond reasonable doubt that Al Franken is not, and never was, funny?

Cite for these opinion polls?

Put up or shut up. You can’t keep making these claims without facts to back them up.

To be fair, *Milum ** did put the “Resolved…” statement about Bush in the OP. I guess the debate here is that LNN is failing and that means Bush will win. I think it’s way too early to determine the former or the latter.

"Liberal News Network

Still doesn’t change the fact that he only mentioned that briefly at the very end, and never explained the relation between his Air America cite and comment about the election.

I agree.

I, for one, quite enjoy listening to Air America. I stream it to my laptop at home while I’m working on other stuff. It’s quite entertaining. But I’m a socially liberal, fiscally conservative, homosexual home-owner, the very antithesis of Bush supporters everywhere…

JOhn.

Sounds like Air America has some lousy accountants.

Perhaps its managers should, at their descretion, apply a floating point system to their business model. That should get them the results they expect.

Frankly, I was just mildly disturbed to see that the LNN believes that its listeners “rely” on them. It seemed so… Fundamentalistic.

I agree that their going off the air is much ado about nothing, but in reading about what happened I learned that they paid a million bucks or something to lease air time in those markets.

Why are they paying to get on the air? As far as I know, no other talk shows do that - Limbaugh never has, I’m sure.

And if they’re paying money to be on the air, is this just another way to circumvent campaign finance laws? If you can’t donate money to politicians so they can buy ad time, just buy the station and run a constant campaign for your guy?

I haven’t heard the station, but are they selling advertising? Is there a profit model for this?
If this is the case, then it will be interesting to see what happens to this network after the election is over.

Damn, sure sounds like porn.

I don’t suppose you’re offering any action on that spread.

In the words of the legendary Fran Leibowitz, if your sexual fantasies were of any real interest to anybody else, they wouldn’t be fantasies.

As to the whole liberal radio thing…I just don’t figure it will work. I can’t really say why, perzactly. Sometimes I listen to rightarded radio, and watch Dennis Miller, stuff like that…and I can’t really imagine doing the same thing for a liberal slant. Don’t even know why. I think Al Franken is right, I just don’t think he’s very funny. P.J. O’Rourke is mostly wrong, but he is funny.

It may have to do with the news. The news is pretty much self-explanatory, the facts are the facts, there they are. Its only when you need those facts explained away that you seek slanted pundits. Under our present circumstances, the news makes our points for us. When GeeDubya tries to tell me that, really, those WMD’s are still there, maybe hidden on a turkey farm…what can you add to that?

As to whether the inevitable collapse of liberal radio means anything…it would be churlish and mean-spirited to deny that meager shred of comfort to our Tighty Righty brethren. If I had to look at GeeDubya and try to find some reason to trust and admire…I mean, damn!

Or as Dennis Miller put it… “There is nothing more interesting to me than my orgasm. And nothing less interesting to me than yours.”

Actually, I think Al Franken is very funny. I also think he’s a good guy. I appreciate the work he does with the USO, and that he NEVER lets politics into it (probably because he knows how that would play to a military crowd, but that’s a point in his favor - he knows when it’s not appropriate).

But rabid partisanship and comedy don’t mix very well. George Carlin stopped being funny when he started going over the top with his politics. Dennis Miller’s new talk show SUCKED when he tried to make all his jokes serious barbs at the left - and it’s much better now, since he’s moved the humor content back more to the center (although he still gets his right-wing point across).

Finally, it’s important to not underestimate the talent of Rush Limbaugh. A lot of liberal talk shows have gone up against him and lost - and I don’t think it’s just a right vs left thing. A lot of it has to do with the fact that Limbaugh is simply a huge radio talent. He can speak extemporaneously for three hours a day, and make it compelling enough that even people who disagree with him listen. Anyone who thinks that’s easy to do should go grab a tape recorder, speak into the mike for, oh, 20 minutes, then play it back and see how they sound.

As Bricker and Shodan will attest, I like placing election bets.

But I’ve got a hunch that this is a sucker bet.

You have to be elected before you can be RE-elected.

Its impossible to underestimate Rush Limbaugh.

Or maybe you just haven’t stumbled into the right chat room yet.

But LNN would be better with Bill Maher than with Franken. I’m sure he’ll find his way on there eventually.

Well, that isn’t true, now is it? Heck, you admit it yourself:

Regardless, in the New York ‘market’, they took over WLIB, which had Caribbean-oriented news and music. They obviously had to displace programming to give people a chance to hear Al Franken and Ms.Garafalo. (Couldn’t you guys at least get Stewart, or someone funny?)

This is what you are reduced to these days? Little drive-bys, the occasional, “Golly gee, I wonder when <insert non-leftist name here> will show to <attack/defend> whatever.”

Sad.

Yes.

A resolved with no discernable connection to the thread’s title or content.

Face it, liberal or conservative, this is not a worthwhile contribution to GD, and it’s no surprise that it isn’t. At least a certain wintry month actually presented coherent debates about actual subjects.

OK, here is the elephant, right here, in front of you, just look:

  • Liberals don’t manage money too good!

See it now? Isn’t that the real BIG News?

PS. Talk radio=waste of time

I don’t know if Limbaugh did when he started…but it’s not an unheard of means of getting yourself on the air when you start a program. There’s an industry of stations, usually low wattage and AM, that specialize in this sort of thing. The have the license and simply sell radio time in blocks to whomever wants it.

Example: The Greaseman (one time Washington king of drive time) began his latest incarnation this way on a Vietnamese station in the mid-atlantic.

Milum-

I will bet you anything you care to lose that there will be no 25 point victory come November. And just to prove to you that I’m serious I currently have these bets on the election:

One 90+ year old bottle of scotch.
$50 at 500-1 (I’m buying me a motorcycle with that one)
Four bottles of Mt Hope Concord vs 2 cases of Yeungling

So how 'bout it? You all mouth?
