Evidently, I’m not so hot at searching the 'net for a diagram. What I’m looking for is the Navy Basic Training diagram for how to store gear in a shipboard “coffin locker” (the locker under the mattress).

That said, I don’t recall the issue breing brought up when I was in boot camp thirty years ago. And I sure as hell didn’t follow any diagram when I went to sea and stowed my gear in my coffin locker. This was on a submarine, though, so it’s possible that my rack was different from what you’re envisioning.
Need it for a comparison, actually. I never served on a submarine (I’m sure I wouldn’t’ve been able to keep my claustrophobia in check long enough). More than a few of my shipmates followed the method they learned in boot camp but my basic training was with the Army so that’s no help for what I need now.
There is no such “diagram” Once you are out of boot camp and at your duty station what is in your rack and how you keep it is just a clusterfuck. Its not like Monk runs the fuckin NAVY.
Oh, boot camp is a very different animal. you have bunks (beds) that two recruits will share as well as one upright “locker” that serves as your storage area. You will be be following instructions such as how to fold your briefs and how to make your bed, but this is done in order to make you conform. This could be what you are looking for. There are rigid inspections with no notice to see if you can follow direction. The LPO (Leading petty officer) makes all rules about how to stow your gear. Each company has an LPO. Each company has a very different LPO, but they all have the same goal in mind. Like I said, Once you graduate from boot camp, they concider you are now a big boy/girl and you can stow your stuff how you like.
MONTY, I forgot to say that you should Google "The bluejacket’s manual’. This will give you some very good insight. Every NAVY recruit has been given one since 1902. It is regarded as the NAVY Bible.

Can’t say what the current configuration is, but years ago the dungaree shirts went on hangers in the stand-up lockers, so the rack locker had toiletries, dungaree trousers, skivvy shorts, socks, rolls of shitpaper, and fuckbooks, with the fuckbook du noir under the mattress itself until swiped by the daily compartment-cleaning crew.
