In the Nat’l Basketball Assn., players wear warmup pants with Velcro ™ or snaps on the outside seams. When he’s called off the bench, he pulls forward on the seams, and the whole garment comes off in one sweep.
The story I heard was that the league ordered the tear-off pants after an embarassing incident. A player in a televised game stood up to get ready to go into the game. He yanked down his warmup pants, and his uniform shorts came down, too. There he was, mooning the crowd. The next week, says the story, all NBA teams wore tear-off warmup pants.
Part 2: I saw a barmaid wearing tearoff warmups. I wonder if she wears those on the first date?
Jason Sehorn’s pants fell partway down during an NFL game once. He stopped running and grabbed his pants, allowing the other team to score a touchdown. When questioned, Sehorn’s coach said, “I don’t blame him; I would have stopped and grabbed my pants too!”
The incident with Sehorn came in against Detroit in 2000. Sehorn said that the receiver (Johnnie Morton) was already past him and was going to score anyway, so he decided to cut his losses in a way.
It happened in the MLB once too, I believe it was a Phillie to dove into first base, got up, and had dirt/dust all over his front…he proceded to undo his belt, and take down his pants so he could dust off his shirt and tuck it back in.
This supposedly happened to a BYU basketball player once during a game. It was somebody famous, at least around those parts, but I disremember who. He got up off the bench at the very beginning of the game, dropped his warmups, and the collective jaws of the crowd as well.
I think this happened to Robert “Tractor” Traylor when he was playing college basketball for Michigan as well, except his happened on the court during play.
