In North Carolina, we’re getting ready to vote on whether or not there should be an amendment added to our constitution defining the only legally recognized domestic union as a marriage between a man and a woman. It’s going to be a close vote and the rhetoric is getting pretty heated. Conservative Christian churches are mobilizing their parishioners to vote for the amendment. Rev. Sean Harris, from the Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, NC, doesn’t just think you should vote “for”, he thinks you should be a little more proactive with your kids. See your son with a “limp wrist”? “Crack that wrist!”
What I find most disturbing is the reaction of the congregation - laughter. It’s heartbreaking that children are being raised in such hateful environments.
Even worse, he doesn’t know the difference between “squash” and “quash”.
Hey, look at the bright side. The fact that the vote is going to be close IN NORTH CAROLINA means we’ve come a long way. How would that vote have gone 10 years ago?
Good point. I retract my judgment of the Senator’s wife. I’m surprised he lets her actually speak in public though, I mean, shouldn’t she be at home cooking?
While I’m not inclined to dismiss or trivialize the distressing levels of homophobia in our culture, I have to point out that I’m not sure ALL of those comments were meant to be taken ENTIRELY at face value.
Like this one, for example:
I don’t think it’s particularly funny to joke about killing girls OR homosexuals, but stupid hateful unfunny jokes are at least better than stupid hateful serious threats. And I suspect we’re dealing with more of the former than the latter here.
Oh, I’m in no way claiming this is a sample of the world’s leading rocket scientists or anything, but let’s be real here: I’m willing to bet the average American improperly uses your/you’re as frequently as these scumbags.
