Amendment One Passes in NC

Weeping and gnashing of teeth to follow on the SDMB…

Congrats NC! Welcome to the 19th Century! :smack:

No, the 19th century approach would have been to pretend that gays don’t exist at all.

The American right, gentlemen. Evil *and *stupid.

They passed this because they saw the writing on the wall. In ten years, this kind of thing will never fly. And since North Carolina apparently allows amendment of their Constitution by a majority vote (derp), changing it back won’t be hard at all.

Sucks for the citizens of North Carolina who opposed this, since a lot of talented and productive people will leave the State. But things will get better soon.

Of note, this puts lie to the claim that opposition to same-sex marriage is all about protecting religious choice, or about preserving the traditional definition of marriage, since this will also prohibit same-sex unions to provide equal civil rights to gay couples.

And they seem so proud of themselves.

So, are you going to take a position on the amendment, or just sneer at those of us who think gay people deserve the same rights as straight people?

In all civilized states, I would hope. The death throes of an ideology…fascinating but repulsive at the same time.

Will a debate follow?

Rejoicing and celebrating by homophobic idiotic pedophile Republicans to follow.

Do you have a position on this?

If no debate to follow, I request this thread be moved to the pit.

I strongly and sincerely wish very bad things on people who vote for craptastic laws that fly in the face of what America is supposed to be about.

On a side note, in the NC Dem Primary:

“no preference” currently has 20% of the vote against Obama
Not exactly good news when 20% of your own party doesn’t want to vote for you

You know what? I missed the edit window, but I’d just like to expand upon my previous remark to clarify that I sincerely wish Very Bad Things (and I’m talking horrible wasting disease, suicide-inducing public humiliation, or ideally living ((in a stunted unsatisfying way)) to see the destruction of everything you hold dear type Very Bad Things) upon everyone who sorta kinda vaguely supports the concept of institutionalized bigotry.

DianaG I completely dig where you’re coming from. But I think something Faaaaab-U-loous!!! should happen to every person who voted for Amendment 1

Save it for the Pit, DianaG.

It’s not 20 percent of his own party. It’s 20 percent of the people who bothered to vote in a primary where the result is a foregone conclusion.

No. I thought Elections was a place for discussion about issues related to the election. Didn’t realize there needed to be a debate. Please move as needed.

Erm… huh? I’m not allowed to insult theoretical people outside the pit now?

Death throes indeed. Nobody will take this seriously in ten years.
