I knew it wouldn't last, Florida.

Yeah, I was freakin’ thrilled to see you go for Obama - and I don’t care what Daily Kos says, you will.

Then I remembered Prop 2 - defining marriage as “one man, one woman”. 60% needed to amend the state constitution. “It’ll never pass,” I thought. Well, it looks like you passed it at 62%.

Assholes. Even my own generally reasonable Orange County is approving it at 60%.

Maybe I’ll wake up and be wrong, in which case I’ll offer a sincere apology. Until then, up yours, state.

Californians, feel free to join in.

Hey, fuck you. I voted against it.

Dollars to donuts it’ll be struck down as unconstitutional within three years.

Ditto. I tried my best. Unfortunately, there was literally nobody trying to oppose it. I never once saw a sign saying “Vote no on 2”. Only happy little blue and red stick figures that held hands and said “Vote yes on 2, for safe children” or somesuch bullshit.

Not looking good for Prop 8 in CA either.

Fucking knee-jerk religious assholes.

I know how you feel. Here I was finally proud of my state going blue and then I saw that amendment was passing.

I actually saw plenty of ads against amendment 2, there was a TV ad playing often about a man and woman in a domestic partnership. However those wanting yes on 2 just had to put up signs to “protect the children”. I don’t think a lot of people really understood it. As a general rule I always vote no on amendments unless I really understand what it’s saying, I think everyone else votes yes. I hold hope that it will be struck down soon as unconstitutional.

Won’t it be tough to strike down a constitutional amendment as unconstitutional?

I’m so disgusted about this that there is very little I can say that won’t create vitriolic division and ill-will on an otherwise historic night of unity.

I voted NO on 2 as well. I say fuck you to the ass-douche-clowns who wrote this and FUCK YOU to those that voted for it.

So CA Prop 8 and FL Prop 2 BOTH passed tonight.

Bastards.

Prop 8 is official?

Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

And fuck.

On a good note, Both proposals 1 & 2 passed in MI. So, those that need it can now smoke and grow pot. And we can fuck around with embryonic stem cells. That’s progress!

High five?

And to commiserate with the gay marriage ban… yeh, that blows. Two steps forward, one step back.

8 isn’t official yet. Some of the big Bay Area counties aren’t in yet much, and they’ll go No. But, neither is most of LA, and LA is going Yes. It’s getting a little closer, but it’s 53/47.

22% of San Franciscans voted yes.

Sigh. I wish we at least needed at 60%. It wouldn’t pass at that.

I’m holding out some small hope, but it’s not looking good. If it passes, I’m prepared to dedicate myself to whatever our next step is, and for continuing my small, personal struggle against homophobia.

And Prop 2 passed handily. Somehow, we have more compassion for farm animals than for gay people.

You’ve gotta be shitting me. Didn’t you think that so many of the same folk who would be cheering on Obama would be rabidly anti-gay? As much as it was great to hear Obama himself mention ‘gay and straight’ in his acceptance speech, it was clear that a massive number of his ‘liberal’ supporters who turns up to church every weekend was going to draw the line at the ‘horror’ of a man and a man, or woman and woman, being in love.

Pretty much, yeah. If Obama hadn’t pulled so many people who didn’t normally vote, or didn’t normally vote Democratic, the measure would never have stood a chance. On the other hand, Obama isn’t running for anything in 2010, and you can bet your ass that this is going to be on the ballot again that year, without the drama of a national election to drive up interest, and with another two years to shift the demographics. Worst case scenario, we’ve got a two year hiatus in gay marriage in California. Sucks, but hardly the end of the world.

Yes, and think of the boost to the economy with everyone having to get remarried.

It’ll take another 2 or 4 years. but this amendment will be gone like the 18th amendment of the US constitution. I apologize to my Californian gay/lesbian bretheren (sisteren???) for the callous passage of this mean spirited movement. Hang in there, attitudes are changing, hell, my own attitudes have changed over my lifetime. I know there is little solace in this loss, but people will come around.

There is some chance that Prop 8 could still get voted down after they count the 3 million or so absentee ballots, so we’ll see in the morning. I really hope it fails.

I dunno - you can fantasize all you like about the idea that a country, where the POTUSA will always have to declare themselves a Christian (capital ‘C’), will ever accept the fact that same sex marriages will become norm. But really, you’re going to have to move to another continent before you ever see that become a reality. Me - I’m all primed to move to Scandinavia, and I’m not even gay, but I’m sick to death of being around ‘liberals’ who care about you, and want you to feel equal to every one else, so long as you don’t enjoy the company of (gasp!) members of the same sex.

Alright, so now you’ve broken through one barrier, what year do you think it will be when you’re able to trump Christian bias against gays, for liberal bias in favour of gays. 2200? 2400?

I’ll see you all in Stockholm.
