NC/SC Road Trip

This weekend I am traveling through North and South Carolina. Here is my problem: It seems that I have overextended myself and I need to eliminate part of my trip. I must choose between Nag’s Head/Outer Banks area and Charleston, SC. Which one would you suggest visiting?

Also, any suggestions on what to see in these two states would be great as well.

The areas have some in common but much different, so recommendations will be based more on what you enjoy or are looking to do.

The outerbanks have some great beaches, but there’s really not much else to do there aside from some mediocre nightlife.

Charleston also has some nice beaches nearby, but as a city it has shopping, parks, museums etc.

What USCDiver said.

Do you want a relaxing stay on the beach, or do you want to do stuff?

If you really hate hot humid weather, I’d pick the Outer Banks over Charleston. If you are very type A personality, you might like Charleston better. As mentioned, there are more things to do. If you do go to Charleston, Middleton Plantation is one interesting and scenic place to visit. If you are a foodie, Charleston is probably also a better choice. Also, if you live near a beach at home and beaches are no big deal, choose Charleston. Although the Outer Banks are really nice beaches, and I don’t mean to imply there’s nothing to do or see. There are lighthouses, islands, old historic towns, wild horses, military sites. Still, the best thing to do on the Outer Banks is enjoy simple seafood and barbecue meals and relax on beautiful beaches.
