NCAA Football playoff thread

I’d love to see Penn State boatrace the Condoms, just so the Selection Committee look like even bigger morons for not taking the Conference Champion.

A HUSH has swept over the pro-B1G lobby today. Guess they are hoping Wisconsin & Iowa & PSU can save their bowl season.

I think that will be the ultimate consequence of OSU’s meltdown. There was an argument to be made for Ohio State over PSU, with only one loss compared to the Lions’ two. But it was a subjective argument, and results like last night can take subjective arguments and cause permanent controversy. It’s better to have a straightforward system in which only conference champions are eligible. There will occasionally be strong teams that fail to win conference titles, but I’d rather have a system in which a strong non-champion gets left out rather than what happened this year, with a strong conference champ being left to wonder what might have been. Of course PSU could get thrashed tonight and maybe we won’t have that debate, but the fact that it’s a possible outcome should be enough to force changes.

The Gators just whipped Iowa’s buttocks 30-3! Iowa’s quarterback was practically getting Joe Buck man crush treatment from the announcers, but they couldn’t cover up his pathetic performance that they blamed on all the bumps and bruises he got during the game.

I guess these refs like fucking little boys too. The way they’re sucking Pedophile State’s dick.

So. It’s possible my previous post was over the top, just a bit.*

Still, that may have been one of the more lop-sided ref jobs I’ve seen in a long time and since I support an ACC team (and FSU at that), that’s saying something. The ESPN/Conference Network incestuous relationship is getting out of hand.

*I take back nothing about PSU. That school has consistently refused to accept the fact that they, as an institution, put football above the welfare of children. When called on it, they whined and bitched and sued to get out any penalty for it. I hope all involved burn in hell forever.

Hard as it was to admit, I think Ohio State was probably the correct selection. But holy shit did they stink on ice. And oh, did I enjoy it! Fans around here are glad to see the offensive coordinator taking off for Texas. “Should have run the ball more!” Outside of one long run, they were getting stuffed all night. The O-line sucked. Couldn’t run block or pass protect. And if JT Barrett had any kind of NFL stock going into the game, it has completely sunk now.

I am a 44yr old Aussie who has been a fan of the NFL for 38 years, I was watching sportcenter on ESPN when they were talking about the college rankings. So I watched all the games of the top 4 ranked teams. I believe that the buckeyes should have been ranked number 4 because they had less wins than 1,2,4 but less losses than those ranked 5 or below, does this sound fair to you? I have never watched a game of college footy (OZWORDFORAFOOTBALLMATCH) BUT NOW I AM HOOKED. I loved hearing the atmosphere at the Tigers v Red birds game. I think that any Aussie Rules Football HALF-BACK FLANKER could be the king of interceptions of all of your footy. This is not the game Hayne played, he played rugby league. If you would like to see how hard aussie rules can be youtube BYRON PICKETT BIG HITS.

There is a huge financial incentive for them to give it a try.

I know right, but only the ones who play a different game (rugby league)(JARED HAYNE) go over to give it a try. The positions I played in, the back half (DE FENCE) would = The free safety position in your game. The highest payed player in AFL ( Aussie Rules Footy ) earns just over 1 mill a year. This is for playing a game without protection. These players are much fitter than USA footy players, we play on an oval at least 160 yards long an 100 yards wide.I love the Atmosphere at your college games, and want to see a Clemson Home Game in the flesh (I LOVE THE SOUND THERE), but I don’t know if I will. The reason for this is that you HAVE TO MANY GUNS OVER THERE. If you watched BYRON PICKETT he was the best hunter( INTERCEPTOR ) of the ball I have seen, and gee he could hit someone like a ton of Bricks. He won the Norm Smith Medal (MVP) in the Grand Final (SUPERBOWL) for best on ground year 2000 I think. Hey Mate, tell me who you cheer for ( IN OZ ROOTING MEANS EFFING, WHEN WE HERE YOU SAY THAT WE LAUGH ) and I will watch the games on you tube and discuss. By the way the youngest player in VFL/AFL history was TIM WATSON, he started playing when he was 15yrs and 200 days old.

Yeah, I know. I’m on record in other threads as saying that, if the charges were proven, Jameis should pay for the crime. They weren’t. Even after the media spotlight. I do think there were problems with FSU’s Title IX compliance office and FSU should pay the appropriate penalty and… (and here’s my problem with PSU) NOT bend over backwards to pretend they didn’t exist and get out of them wherever possible.

Either way, whatever. PSU lost, as did a majority of the Big10. Final Conference Rankings:
Power 5
ACC (73%)
Record: 8-3

BIG10 (30%)
Record: 3-7

BIG12 (66%)
Record: 4-2

PAC12 (50%)
Record: 3-3

SEC (50%)
Record: 6-6

Group of 5
AAC (29%)
Record: 2-5

CUSA (57%)
Record: 4-3

MAC (0%)
Record: 0-6

MWC (57%)
Record: 4-3

Sun Belt (66%)
Record: 4-2

The ACC covered themselves with some real glory this post-season. They managed the best post-season record while having 11 of 14 teams make the bowls (a 79% participation percentage, better than all other conferences; second was the SEC with 12 of 16, for 75%). Of the four other conferences which managed a positive result post-season, none had more than 60% of its members make the bowls.

By comparison, this was a fairly down year for the SEC. Although 75% of their teams qualified and went, they only managed a 50% win record (6 - 6). But I consider that better than the Pac-12’s 50% win rate (3 - 3) because the SEC was deeper into the conference with its teams (the Pac-12 sent 50% of theirs).

The B1G had the third-highest participation percentage (71%), but managed only 30% wins.

The Big-(10isnot)12 managed to send 60% of its teams and had a 67% win rate. Of the big conferences, I think they have to be considered second-best.

The Sun Belt (55% participation; 67% win rate) is probably the surprise of the season. The Mountain West (58% participation) and Conf. USA (54% participation) both managed to win 57% of their games, so they can consider themselves satisfied I think.

The AAC, which really, really wants to think of itself as a big-time conference, sent 58% of its teams, and got hammered (2 - 5). I think they had best go back to the drawing board on becoming feared.

Then there’s the MAC.

(Oh, and credit where it’s due: two of four independents played, and both won! And neither of them has “Irish” in their nickname. :D)

G’day Mate in OZ rules footy we have a final 8,the games are 1 V 4,2 V 3, 5 V 8, 6 V 7( V = VERSUS). The Higher ranked team host HOME games in the first week (BECAUSE THEY HAVE A BETTER RECORD), the winners of TOP 4 games have a week off. The losers play the winners of the the two other games ( lets say 5+6), AT HOME. The winners of these games play the winners of the TOP 4 games, to find out who goes into the championship GAME. The team that won the GRAND FINAL ( SUPERBOWL ) this year finished in 8th and won two elimination games to make it into the championship game. We tried a final 6 and it was a bit of a stuff up. Hey by the way does every team get a bowl game? It sure seems like it.

Mate I am new to college football, what happened at PSU? I know OLD JOE was one of the longest serving coaches, what happened there?

It’s a hijack from this thread. You can look it up. There’s only about 3 million articles about it. Just look up why JoePa ‘quit’ coaching. Or search “Penn State 2.4 million fine”. It’s the one piece of all this they haven’t chosen to fight.

In the conferences you have two divisions, If the top 2 ranked teams in each division played each other 1 V 1, with the winner going straight to the CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP. The loser would play the winner of 2 V 2, to see who would play in the Championship game. This would give all the teams a chance at a Winning end to the Season, and would give a truer picture of who the best teams are. In any contact sport there will be injuries and mistakes that can lose a game. I am unbiased when it comes to your game, but the REFEREES won the buckeyes game against the wolverines. In this scenario they would have had a chance to avenge that loss. This would mean more games for the NCAA to make money out of.
Also if two teams go undefeated through the season, they should have a PRO-BOWL style game ( FUN AND EXCITING ) a week before the PRO-BOWL in Hawaii with the NCAA paying all expenses. I would love to see how West MICH would go against BAMA in a game like this. Would you?

They sound like the Catholic Church, SMU got the death penalty for far less. They should all go to jail.

I haven’t kept up with the story but it almost seemed like there was willful blindness to the allegations against Winston both inside FSU and even among officials who conducted the “investigation”. There’s no question that the PSU case was one of the most horrific of any in collegiate athletics, and I advocated on another message board (some time ago now) that PSU’s football program should have received a 5-year death penalty. That being said, what happens on many other college campuses is no less atrocious. Programs that knowingly tolerate a culture in which their athletes engage in physical and sexual assault should also be shut down for a few years so that we can all get our priorities straight.

Anyhoo, back on track, who ya got this Monday?

My brain tells me Bama is a better team but I do wonder about their coaching situation. The Tide really did seem to be distracted by Kiffin’s punk ass and you just have to wonder how Sarkisian (no stranger to controversy himself) is going to handle matters.

The spread right now is Alabama -6.5; over/under is 51.

I say it’ll be Clemson by 8, 36-28 final score (64).
