If you commit penalties that make it impossible for the offense to score on the first play, you’ve limited their ability to score from 2 plays to 1. The idea that the the QB is going to walk in is unlikely. He is still got to get by the defensive line and linebackers. If I had the ball on my own 1 yard line on offense, I’d do everything I could to get the other side to jump. A delay of game cost me 1/2 the distance. Half of nothing is nothing.
