This weekend, thanks to the “wonder” of interleague play, the Baltimore Orioles will play the St. Louis Cardinals for the first time ever, in St. Louis. Back in the day, 1954 to be exact, the St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore to become the Baltimore Orioles, establishing a franchise that has been one of the most storied and successful in all of MLB in the last 50 years, at least until King Peter bought the team and ran it into the ground.
On Saturday the two teams will commemorate the 1944 World Series by wearing “throwback” uniforms. In 1944, in the famous “Streetcar Series”, at the height of WWII, St. Louis achieved a destinction that has otherwise been reserved primarily for New York: a Series where both teams were from the same city.( Yankees vs Mets/Giants/Dodgers, many times , although the '89 San Francisco/Oakland Series is close and the Cubs lost the 1906 Series to the White Sox in the only other same-city championship )
What this means is that the Baltimore Orioles will take the field wearing the road jersies of a long vanished St. Louis team. I was wondering, has this ever happened before? Has any baseball team ever played a game wearing the uniforms of, not just an older version of itself, but of a previous team from which it evolved? In any event, I think it’s pretty neat.
