Need a LoTR Quote

My wife is a Veterinarian, and she wants to send a sympathy card to clients of hers whose old Labrador Retriever has just died.

These clients are avid Lord Of The Rings fans, and she think that an appropriate quote from that that illustrious work would be appreciated.

She asked me, but since I’m not all that well versed in LoTR, I’m asking you.

Can anyone provide a one or two sentence quote that would be appropriate for a sympathy card for a loved pet who has passes away?

Thanks.

“I will not say: Do not weep. For not all tears are evil”
~Gandalf, at the Grey Havens

In the movie (TTT), Gandalf is consoling Theoden on the death of his son. Paraphrasing, he says something like: “He was strong in life. His spirit will find its way to the halls of your ancestors.”

Thanks for the input… I’ll let her know what the experts have come up with so far…

Any idea where this is in the book so we can use an exact quote?

No. It’s not in the movie.

Ergh…not in the book, I mean.

You might be thinking of Huan the hound in the Silmarillion. I don’t have the book handy, and don’t remember any quotes, so I’m not much help.

There’s also a quote about a faithful dog (Kaval?) in one of the T.H. White books, but I’m not having any luck finding the link.

So, except for these elusive hints, I’m no help whatsoever.:smack:

I’ll post back if I find anything.

Don’t have my copy of FOTR with me. But if someone does, try finding the blessing Gandalf lays on Bill the pony’s head outside the entry to Moria.

I think it makes a nice valedictory.

To quote:

He laid his hands on the pony’s head, and spoke in a low voice. “Go with words of guard and guiding to you,” he said. “You are a wise beast, and have learned much in Rivendell. Make your wats to places where you can find grass, and so come in time to Elrond’s house, or wherever you wish to go.”

Ways, not “wats”… preview, damnit…

I second this one, defenatly the best for the occassion.

I know it’s from Fellowship and that Aragorn says this, but I can’t recall specifically where it is.

Whatever you do, don’t look for an appropriate attitude toward animals in Tolkein’s “Farmer Giles of Ham.” Stick with LOTR.
