Need advice re: my salary vs. my peers

Not a discrimination case.

I was just turned onto www.glassdoor.com by a SDMB member. It turns out that about 10 of my peers have also filled out the salary survey on the site. I’m making 10% than the lowest reported figure in the range, and 25% less than the average.

I got my current responsibilities starting at the beginning of the year. It was a “lateral” move (read: no raise granted after my request) from software test engineering to software engineer. Basically, I was highly paid under my old title, and now I’m below the “going rate.”

I’ve got 14 years of software development related experience, but only 1 year of experience in this role.

Do I make a case to the boss to bring me in line with others?

My line-of-thought now is to ask for an honest evaluation of my contributions since joining this team. If at least satisfactory, I’ll bring up that I don’t feel that I’m being paid similarly to my peers and would like to have my salary raised to an appropriate level. If less than satisfactory, understand what is expected to be considered satisfactory and set a date for another informal evaluation with the expectation of increased salary if I meet clearly defined objectives.

My concern, like every other person out there, is that if my request jeopardizes my employment, I’d be in some serious shit with the current job market.

Just wondering what you’d recommend…

I would get a year behind you and then approach your boss for the increase. Once you prove yourself a while longer, you’ll have a better case for a raise.
