First, I apologize if this should be in the Mundane thread. I’m new.
I’m looking for books dealing with colonial American history, before 1772. There’s a lot out there, but I’m not sure which authors I should trust. Any ideas?
Thanks

I’m not trying to be a junior mod, but I have a few tips that might help you out (all IMHO, of course).
First, a thread like this should probably have a more descriptive title. When I read the title I was thinking of recommending a couple of John Grisham novels.
Also, this probably isn’t the forum you’re looking for. Cafe society might fit it (as it relates to books), but GQ would probably be more fitting as you’re using the SDMB as a research resourse.
Welcome, lightingtool. I made a lot of the same mistakes (do a search on my early threads and try not to laugh too hard.)
And a note to the mods: If I’m overstepping my bounds please don’t hesitate to tell me.
Bastard! Come here and I’ll BOX YOUR EARS!
Nah, you’re absolutely right. I’ll change the title and move this over to CS, where it can nestle in with the “Need Book on World War One” thread.
Aaaaaahh, nuts. I was afraid of that.
If a mod would like to delete this post, I’ll start over somewhere else.
Sorry for the confusion, dopers.
:smack:
Just sit tight right here, and welcome to the Boards.
What sort of information are you looking for? The true colonial history of the early 1700s or the revolutionary era from 1750 on? There’s a wide gap in what’s what at that point.
Gee, I guess I could have been more vague…
What I’m looking for is the early stuff before the revolutionary era. I took a couple courses in college that dealt with this, but that was a while ago and I’d like to get back into it. The most recent book I’ve read on the subject was
“A New England Town: The First Hundred Years” by Kenneth A. Lockridge. Also, books dealing with exploration or the interaction between the colonists and the natives would be great. Hope this narrows it down a bit, and thanks for your help
Try this one out, its available at Barnes and Noble.
“American Colonies: The settling of North America” by Alan Taylor
My wife had it for an early American history class, it is great.
John Truslow Adams, The Founding of New England.
Charles McLean Andrews, The Colonial Period of American History.
Marcus Lee Hansen, The Atlantic Migration, 1607-1860.
Sumner Chilton Powell, Puritan Village: The Formation of a New England Town.
Rhys L. Isaac, The Transformation of Virginia, 1740-1790.
